Job summary

Randstad Construction and Property is recruiting a Lead Mechanical Engineer to oversee mechanical building services at a commercial site in Manchester. You will own heating, ventilation, air conditioning and mechanical plant assets, directing maintenance to ensure compliant, efficient operation for occupants.

You will lead the on-site engineering team, manage subcontractors, and ensure safety standards and CAFM record-keeping are maintained.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer within a high-demand facilities management environment.
• CPMPS certification (Competent Person Mechanical & Pressure Systems).
• BPSS security clearance or ability to pass.
• Strong fault-finding across complex HVAC and heating plant with client-facing responsibilities.
• Desirable: IPAF, PASMA and a full clean UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned preventive maintenance, fault-finding, and reactive repairs across all mechanical systems.
• Lead the site engineering team and supervise visiting subcontractors as the main mechanical contact on site.
• Ensure health and safety compliance, including risk assessments, permits to work, and Legionella monitoring.
• Maintain spare parts inventory and plant performance logs in CAFM system.
• Participate in 24/7 on-call rota and respond to emergencies to keep site operations running.

Job description

Randstad C&P are currently recruiting a Lead Mechanical Engineer to oversee and deliver complete mechanical building services across a commercial site in Manchester. As the lead technical engineer on site, you will take ownership of all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and mechanical plant assets. You will direct daily planned and reactive maintenance to ensure peak operational performance, strict statutory compliance, and a comfortable environment for all building occupants.

Key Duties:

• Carry out planned preventative maintenance, complex fault-finding, and reactive repairs across all heating, ventilation, cooling, and mechanical building systems to keep environmental conditions fully optimised.
• Lead the site engineering team and supervise visiting subcontractors whilst acting as the primary technical point of contact for all mechanical plant operations.
• Enforce total site compliance with health and safety standards by managing risk assessments, method statements, permits to work, and Legionella monitoring routines.
• Manage mechanical spare parts inventory, prepare accurate repair cost estimates, and maintain up-to-date plant performance logs within the CAFM system.
• Participate in the 24/7 on-call rota and respond swiftly to emergency breakdowns to maintain uninterrupted site operations.

Requirements

• 5 to 10 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer within a high-demand facilities management (FM) environment.
• City & Guilds Mechanical Engineering Services NVQ Level 2 (or higher) and Competent Person Mechanical and Pressure Systems (CPMPS).
• Must be able to pass and maintain basic security clearance (BPSS).
• Strong fault-finding ability across complex HVAC and heating plant, with excellent communication skills for client-facing responsibilities.
• Desirable: IPAF, PASMA, and a full clean UK driving licence.
