Job description

At Cellular Highways, we develop advanced, automated high-throughput cell sorting instruments for research and clinical applications. To support the next stage of our growth, we’re looking to recruit a Lead Mechanical Engineer to play a key role in delivering the next generation of our technology, while also supporting ongoing improvements to our current instrument and production processes.

You’ll be joining at a pivotal time, as we focus on developing our second-generation instrument. In parallel, you’ll contribute to ongoing improvements to our first-generation instrument and consumable cartridges, which are already in production. Your work will span product enhancements and supporting the scale up manufacturing as we grow.

Ideally, you’ll have experience working with complex, multidisciplinary products and enjoy taking the initiative to drive development and refinement. Experience developing products for regulated environments (such as medical devices, diagnostics, or GMP manufacturing) would be especially valuable. With our ambitious growth plans, you’ll also have the opportunity to broaden your skillset and grow with the company.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Providing engineering leadership in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment
  • Managing existing product lines, ensuring that scale-up plans can be achieved
  • Scoping out new developments to create next generation products that meet user needs
  • Designing precision components and assemblies using 3D CAD
  • Using your technical knowledge to work with challenging product requirements
  • Building and de-bugging electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Carrying out engineering testing to evaluate performance against specification
  • Optimising designs and manufacturing processes for robustness and reliability
  • Developing quality manufacturing processes under ISO 13485 and cGMP controls

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering degree (or related discipline)
  • Experience with the design and development of instrumentation (experience with optical design is a plus)
  • Experience with planning and leading complex development projects
  • Team management and mentoring skills
  • Proficient in using 3D CAD (ideally including SolidWorks)
  • Hands-on ability to build, test and troubleshoot
  • Innovative problem-solving skills
  • Wide range of design experience which may include assembly jigs and test equipment
  • Knowledge of a range of manufacturing techniques (ideally including injection moulding)
  • Familiar with product release activities and regulatory requirements
  • Competent in writing technical documentation, such as installation and service guides
  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative approach
