Lead Mechanical Design Engineer (HVAC & Building Services)

Location: Chelmsford (Hybrid: 3 days office / 2 days WFH)

Salary: £45,000 – £60,000 (Dependent on qualifications and experience)

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

The Opportunity

We are seeking a talented Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead our Mechanical Design Department and help shape the future of our projects. This hybrid role (minimum three days per week in our Chelmsford office) is ideal for someone looking to balance collaboration with autonomy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver mechanical design for HVAC systems across various sectors.
  • Create detailed calculations, drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Conduct site surveys and provide on-site support when needed.
  • Collaborate with clients, architects, and project stakeholders to coordinate designs.
  • Ensure compliance with UK building regulations, CIBSE guidelines, and sustainability targets.
  • Evaluate subcontractor and supplier designs to ensure alignment with project needs.
  • Participate in internal design reviews and contribute to continuous technical improvement.

What We’re Looking For

  • Degree, HND, or HNC in Building Services or equivalent
  • Proven experience in mechanical design within the building services industry.
  • Comfortable working across commercial, healthcare, and education projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and relevant design tools (e.g., MepWorxs).
  • Strong knowledge of building regs, CIBSE, and BREEAM standards.
  • A proactive, collaborative, and enthusiastic team player.
  • Passionate about sustainability and innovation in design.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder coordination skills.
