Astute's Power team is partnering with a leading facilities management company to recruit a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer for its Decarbonisation and Energy division.

The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer role comes with a starting salary of up to 90,000 + car allowance + benefits package.

Responsibilities and duties of the Lead Mechanical Design Engineer role

Reporting to the Engineering and Design Director you will:

  • Lead mechanical design and engineering efforts across RIBA Stages 2–4, and provide technical oversight through project delivery phases (RIBA 5–7).
  • Design and integrate low–carbon mechanical systems such as heat pumps, HVAC, BMS, and district heating solutions.
  • Ensure regulatory and standards compliance, including CIBSE, PAS 2035, MCS, and UK Building Regulations.
  • Lead BIM and CAD coordination to ensure effective integration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Develop and refine energy performance modelling tools for mechanical systems analysis and optimisation.
  • Coordinate and manage multidisciplinary design integration, ensuring design continuity across mechanical, electrical, and energy systems.
  • Mentor and develop a high–performing team of mechanical design engineers, encouraging continuous professional growth.
  • Oversee funding application support (e.g. PSDS, GHNF, HNES), including technical input and compliance documentation.
  • Support strategic procurement and supplier engagement, ensuring optimal mechanical solutions are selected for cost–efficiency and performance.
  • Lead decarbonisation strategies and retrofit designs, aligning with clients' sustainability goals and funding requirements.



Professional qualifications
We are looking for someone with the following:

  • A degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (MEng/BEng or equivalent), providing a strong technical foundation.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with CIBSE or IMechE (preferred), demonstrating professional recognition and expertise.
  • At least 10 years of experience leading mechanical design and delivering retrofit and decarbonisation projects across various sectors.
  • In–depth technical knowledge of HVAC systems, heat pumps, district energy systems, and low–carbon technologies, especially within retrofit environments.
  • Proficiency in energy modelling and design software, such as IES, Energy Pro, PVsol, Bluebeam, and BIM/CAD platforms.
  • A thorough understanding of UK industry standards and regulations, including CIBSE guidelines, PAS 2035, MCS certification, and relevant building regulations.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring abilities, with experience managing design teams and coordinating across multidisciplinary functions.
