About the employer: Status Motor Group is a used car dealership in Barking specialising in quality, luxury, prestige and performance vehicles for retail sale.
All workshop activity is focused on our own stock only; no retail customer work, meaning you’ll be working on a wide variety of modern vehicles to prepare them to a high standard for sale.
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Master Mechanic / Lead Technician to take ownership of all vehicle diagnostics and mechanical work in our in‑house workshop.
You will
Act as the senior technical expert on site, carry out advanced diagnostics and fault finding on a wide range of vehicles, oversee and support a small team of less experienced mechanics/technicians, and ensure all vehicles are prepared to a safe, reliable and retail‑ready standard within agreed timeframes.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform full mechanical diagnostics on petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles using appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment
- Diagnose and repair engine, transmission, braking, suspension, electrical and electronic faults
- Carry out servicing, repairs, timing belts/chains, clutches, brakes, steering, suspension and general mechanical work
- Complete pre‑sales inspections and highlight work required to bring cars to retail standard
- Quality check vehicles prior to advertising and handover
- Lead, mentor and supervise a team of junior/less experienced mechanics
- Allocate jobs, support with complex issues and monitor progress in the workshop
- Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard
- Accurately complete job cards and maintain clear records of work carried out
- Take responsibility for workshop housekeeping, tools and equipment
- Work closely with the sales team to prioritise vehicles and meet preparation deadlines
- Follow all health & safety procedures
Required Experience & Skills
- Extensive, hands‑on experience as a vehicle mechanic/technician (ideally several years in a busy workshop or dealership environment)
- Strong diagnostic and problem‑solving skills across a wide range of makes and models
- Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions
- Prior experience leading, supervising or mentoring other mechanics/technicians (formal or informal)
- Confident with modern diagnostic XABVTC tools and equipment
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality workmanship
- Good communication skills and the ability to explain faults and required work clearly
- Full UK driving licence
- Desirable: Experience in a used car dealership environment and/or working predominantly on stock vehicles for sale
- Desirable: Exposure to luxury, prestige or performance brands
- Desirable: Relevant motor vehicle qualifications (e.g., NVQ / City & Guilds / IMI or equivalent)
