The role

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) seeks a skilled expert to advise on marine and coastal physical processes. You will collaborate across teams and with external partners on issues such as climate change impacts and offshore renewable energy infrastructure, shaping NRW’s strategic approach, managing evidence projects, and producing guidance for staff and developers. The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a proactive problem-solving attitude. We support flexible working, with hybrid arrangements to be discussed at appointment. Interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams. Successful candidates will undergo a DBS check. Appointments are typically made within 4-8 weeks after the closing date.

About us

This role is part of the Marine and Coastal Ecosystems Team, a multidisciplinary group dedicated to protecting Wales's marine and coastal environments. The team provides technical advice on topics including habitats, marine mammals, birds, fish, and water quality. You will work alongside leading experts in these areas.

What you will do
  • Lead and manage complex issues affecting NRW policies, strategies, and guidance, including high-profile or contentious casework.
  • Provide statutory advice to Welsh Government and UK departments, reviewing and advising on policies and strategies.
  • Oversee marine physical processes policy to ensure alignment with governmental and international policies.
  • Identify evidence needs, commission and manage evidence projects, and develop guidance for NRW and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of marine physical processes and their legislative, technological, and market implications.
  • Advise NRW Programme Boards and support the delivery of NRW’s Marine Programme.
  • Engage with Welsh Government on marine and coastal policy issues.
  • Undertake health and safety duties and promote equality and diversity policies.
  • Support your personal development through the Sgwrs plan.
  • Perform any other duties appropriate to the role.
Qualifications, experience, knowledge, and skills

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of legislation and policy related to marine and coastal environments in Wales and the UK.
  • Understanding of the priorities and challenges in delivering marine and coastal ecosystem outcomes in Wales.
  • Specialist technical knowledge of marine and coastal physical processes.
  • Experience in evidence and guidance project delivery.

Welsh language requirements
  • Desirable: Level A1 (basic understanding and use of Welsh).
