Job Description

As the Lead FPGA Firmware Engineer, you will be responsible for developing the Control Application Software for GEV PCS range of Electric Drive Systems. As a member of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, you will specify, design, code & validate application software for cutting-edge MW-scale power electronic drive systems for Marine, Naval, Energy and Industry applications.

Core responsibilities:
  • Specifying, designing, coding, validating, and maintaining application software for megawatt-scale power electronic drive systems.
  • Capturing and translation of high-level design requirements into efficient and robust software.
  • Designing, implementation, testing of control application software for converter systems and electrical drives.
  • Writing application software for DSP/FPGA for control of electric motors like induction motors, permanent magnet motors, etc.
  • Supporting commissioning and validation.
  • Integrating control software into larger systems and verifying their functionality.
  • Collaboration with other cross-functional teams.
  • Applying best engineering standards and developing robust design practices.
  • Occasionally travelling to customer sites for meetings or equipment validation - typically a few times per year (a few days up to 2 weeks).
Essential qualifications:
  • A relevant degree in Electrical, Electronics, Software Engineering or equivalent, OR significant experience in an industrial software engineering environment.
  • Sound knowledge of control principles of electrical machines, electrical drives, converters, etc.
  • A solid understanding of converter system and power converter topologies (AC/DC, DC/AC, DC to DC, etc.)
  • Experience writing FPGA/DSP control software for Variable Frequency Drives (induction machines, synchronous machines, permanent magnet machines, etc.).
  • Direct experience writing code in C and VHDL.
  • Valid passport to meet travel requirements.
What will make you stand out:
  • Experience using Hardware-in-Loop (HIL) rigs and laboratory test drives.
  • Experience in writing variable speed drive control software and good understanding of power electronics controls like field-oriented control, PWM strategies, DQ controls.
  • Experience using MATLAB/Simulink or similar model-in-loop simulation tools.
This role involves work for customers who manage critical infrastructure; based on customer requirements it will be necessary to carry out background checks and suitability assessments (UK BPSS clearance OR UK SC clearance) as part of the hiring process.
