Job description

We are currently looking for a Lead FPGA Engineer to join our Research and Development team, based in Dunfermline. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly motivated team of engineers working for a company that is the world leader in retinal imaging products. You will provide project and technical leadership for the design and development of FPGA/embedded firmware architectures and solutions for new retinal imaging products and existing product improvements, as part of a multi-disciplinary R&D team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Drive concept generation, analysis, and development of innovative FPGA/embedded firmware architectures. Lead the FPGA team to ensure successful solution delivery in accordance with the design control process.
  2. Plan, develop, and maintain the FPGA/embedded technology roadmap, focusing on emerging technologies, feature implementation, performance improvements, and cost reduction, while minimizing maintenance efforts.
  3. Estimate work breakdown and ensure the timely delivery of FPGA/embedded architectures and design solutions for complex, multi-engineer projects based on requirements.
  4. Define technical specifications, document designs, and ensure the efficacy of FPGA/embedded firmware architectures and solutions.
  5. Conduct peer reviews, oversee outputs, and exercise technical authority over the FPGA/embedded firmware team’s work.
  6. Execute all aspects of FPGA/embedded firmware development, including collaboration during electronic design, HDL development, behavioral verification, hardware implementation, and troubleshooting with diagnostic tools.
  7. Develop and execute test methods for verification and validation of FPGA modules and systems.
  8. Drive continuous improvement in the FPGA design cycle by adopting best practices and emerging approaches.
  9. Mentor and support the FPGA team, fostering professional development and practical skills.
  10. Communicate design intent and operational workflows of FPGA and embedded firmware architectures to engineers and management across disciplines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Degree in software/embedded firmware engineering, electronic engineering, or equivalent experience.
  2. At least 10 years of extensive experience in complex FPGA/embedded design.
  3. Expertise in FPGA/embedded architecture, detailed design, simulation, verification, and debugging.
  4. Experience delivering FPGA/firmware solutions that interface with other engineering domains such as optical, mechanical, software, or electronics.
  5. Proficiency in VHDL or similar hardware description languages.
  6. Experience in medical manufacturing or instrumentation is preferred.
  7. Strong knowledge of electronics and opto-mechanical embedded systems is highly desirable.
  8. Programming skills in assembler, C, C++, C#, or similar languages, including low-level or driver development, are preferred.
  9. Knowledge of ISO and FDA Medical Design Control processes is advantageous.
  10. Ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and evaluate their potential applications within the company.
  11. Effective planning and time management skills to meet schedules.
  12. Team-oriented, responsive, and customer-focused attitude.
  13. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
