Job Title: Lead Engineer – Air Systems (12-Month Contract)

Contract Type: 12+ month (inside IR35)

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Lead Engineer – Air Systems for a 12-month+ inisde IR35. In this role, you will establish and manage the design control process, ensuring early-stage input from all key stakeholders. You will lead the design and integration of air intake systems, providing technical guidance and ensuring alignment with performance, cost, and timing targets throughout the product lifecycle.

Function Overview

This position sits within a growing Engineering, Research & Development (ER&D) function, supporting delivery for global clients. You will take ownership of a complete module on at least one major project, overseeing it from concept through to production. The role includes technical leadership, design execution, and coordination across cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and integration of air intake system components.
  • Drive the delivery of specifications, performance, and system targets.
  • Conduct packaging studies, feasibility assessments, and concept development.
  • Collaborate with engineering, purchasing, and supplier teams to define design activities.
  • Oversee detailed component and system design using industry standards (including GD&T).
  • Validate CAD data and resolve build issues before release.
  • Act as the central point of contact for design-related technical matters.
  • Identify opportunities for cost, weight, and complexity reduction.
  • Ensure all designs meet technical, timing, cost, and weight requirements.
  • Manage engineering release activities, ensuring completeness and documentation.
  • Support appropriate material selection for performance and compliance.
  • Ensure DFM/DFS/DFA principles are applied and coordinated with suppliers.
  • Liaise with product development, buyers, and suppliers for prototype builds.
  • Maintain accurate and current BOMs.
  • Coordinate testing activities including DVP, PVP, and homologation processes.

Required Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong hands-on experience with PTC CREO and 3D CAD design.
  • Proven background in delivering air system designs in OEM or Tier-1 settings.
  • Expertise in:
    • Air intake system components (dirty air duct, air box, clean air duct, engine cover)
    • Plastic moulding processes and materials
    • NVH, CFD, CAE, DVP, DFMEA, RMDV, mounting systems
    • Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DFM/DFA/DFS)
  • Track record of meeting weight, cost, and timing objectives.
  • Comfortable working with suppliers to implement DFM solutions.
  • Background in industrial heavy machinery or diesel gensets is advantageous.
