Help us create a better future, quicker

Our Distribution Asset Management team plays a key part in maintaining a safe and reliable network now and for the future. The Asset Modelling team are expanding to deliver on our aspirations; we identify improvements to existing processes and develop new models (in python, R, VBA, Excel, Access) to determine asset risk, and subsequently inform modernisation plans and prioritisation on the network.

As Lead Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the visibility of our power assets, and optimising their performance to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future as we develop future business plans for the RIIO-ED3 price control.

What you'll be doing

You will have responsibility for improving our existing asset health models, enhancing corporate asset data through data analysis and visualisation, and deriving useful insights to help manage the Distribution Network (LV - 132kV).

You will work alongside our expert asset engineers by developing models in line with relevant strategies, policies, and RIIO-ED2 business plans for the SPD/SPM networks to minimise system, economic, safety and environmental risks, as well as supporting development of RIIO-ED3 business plan strategies for submission to the regulator. You will maximise the performance of the distribution system expected by our customers, stakeholders, delivering the best returns in both the short and long term.

Directly reporting to the Asset Modelling Manager, you will have responsibility for leading and execution of specific workstream deliverables within the Asset Management & Investment Team, supporting the analysis, development, and implementation of work packages in order to deliver and maintain a safe and reliable network enabling the wider Net Zero ambitions.

What you'll bring
  • Strong background in data handling and processing to obtain useful insights and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • History of systems engineering and model development, with the ability to write and develop functionality for varying user stories.
  • Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges and deliver large highly complex computationally intensive projects quickly to a very high standard, applying innovative thinking where relevant.
  • Ability to analyse and evaluate a complex range of technical, regulatory, commercial, and environmental factors in proposing innovative network developments that are efficient, co-ordinated, and economic.
  • Extensive understanding of distribution and transmission network design across the UK and internationally.
  • Ability to manage innovative data projects whilst working with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the issues impacting SPEN from regulatory / system / operational perspective.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate across SPEN and with customers, with the ability to convey technical concepts to different audiences verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of network design philosophy and policies, asset management techniques and practices.

Minimum Criteria

  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline or HND with suitable experience
  • Preferably registered with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer, or actively working towards this.
