Lead Electrical Engineer – Job Description
At IPS, we are a global leader in providing innovative solutions for the life sciences industry. We are seeking a dedicated Lead Electrical Engineer to join our team in Birmingham, UK. In this role you will plan, design, and direct electrical engineering projects within the Design Department, applying your expertise to resolve engineering problems and deliver high‑quality solutions.
Responsibilities
- Prepare design computations, quantity estimates, and probable construction cost estimates for medium‑voltage power distribution, low‑voltage systems, fire alarm systems, backup power generation, electrical power distribution, and life safety systems.
- Use computer‑assisted engineering and design software (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.) to prepare engineering and design documents.
- Modify reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and designs for projects.
- Perform calculations for lighting, power distribution, equipment sizing, and other design needs.
- Create specialized drawings such as electrical riser diagrams.
- Select equipment based on project requirements and fill out equipment schedules.
- Provide drawings for own designs and produce sketches for drafters.
- Research design options and document findings for the Project Designer/Engineer.
- Keep the Project Manager informed of workload, scope changes, and additional services.
- Provide information to the Project Manager for incorporation into specifications.
- Research code issues and liaise with code officials.
- Maintain a neat and organized work area to allow efficient access to information.
- Ensure drawings and designs meet company production and design standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
- 5+ years of engineering/design experience in the building design industry (e.g., lighting systems, fire alarm systems, branch circuitry).
- Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited four‑year college or university.
- Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer‑aided drafting (AutoCAD, Revit).
- General knowledge of electrical system design and applicable codes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registered professional engineer (PE).
- Willingness to travel based on project complexity and location. This is a safety‑sensitive position involving field work and client site activities in construction, process, packaging, manufacturing, and research areas.
