Job summary

Siemens Mobility is seeking a Lead Design Engineer- Signalling to direct all activities of the team for safe implementation of signalling projects in line with customer specifications and timescales. You will check output quality to meet required standards and target dates.

The role requires a strong engineering background, IRSE licence, and hands-on experience across Scheme Plans, LAP, SSI Wiring, and Westlock systems. Based in Birmingham on an on-site contract with potential extensions.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree or equivalent (HND/HNC) required.
  • IRSE Signalling Principles Designer and Signalling Design Verifier Licence advantageous.
  • Strong and effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in all aspects of design and implementation of Signalling Systems Engineering.
  • Competent in Scheme Plans, LAP, Specifications, SSI Wiring, Fringe Designs and Checking.
  • Westlock trackside system knowledge is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the preparation of technical details, signalling plans, estimates and drawings for signalling works within budget and timescales.
  • Carry out independent checking of Signalling systems as required.
  • Ensure technical and safety standards are maintained across design work for project delivery and reliability.
  • Provide guidance to Design Engineers and team members on all aspects of Signal Design.
  • Forecast manpower requirements to enable resource allocation.

Lead Design Engineer- Signalling

Location: Birmingham

Outside IR35

Contract: February 2027 Minimum (Potential for Extensions)

We have an opportunity to join Siemens Mobility as a Lead Design Engineer- Signalling in our Rail Infrastructure business where you will direct all activities of the teams to achieve the safe implementation of signalling projects to the customer’s specifications and timescales agreed. You will also check the quality of output from the relevant section is to the required standards and target dates are achieved.

You’ll make an impact by
  • Directing the preparation of technical details, signalling plans, estimates and working drawings for signalling works within the project team to meet laid down timescales and authorised budget constraints
  • Carrying out independent checking of Signalling systems as required
  • Ensuring the technical and safety standards are maintained in all aspects of design work in order that successful project implementation and future reliability is achieved
  • Providing functional support and guidance to the Design Engineer(s) and others within the team on all aspects of Signal Design within allocated projects
  • Support forecasting manpower requirements for design work to enable allocation of resources to be made
Your success will be grounded by
  • Engineering Degree/HND/HNC qualification
  • IRSE Signalling Principles Designer and Signalling Design Verifier Licence
  • Strong and effective communication and presentation skills
  • Experience in all aspects of design and implementation of Signalling Systems Engineering with focus on preparation and checking of design plans and working details
  • Competent in Scheme Plans, LAP, Specifications, SSI Wiring, Fringe Designs and Checking.
  • SSI (Westlock) data & Control tables Design/Checking experience will be desirable
  • WTS- Westlock trackside system technology knowledge will be advantage.
