A Lead Design Engineer is responsible for developing and delivering engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed design for transmission network projects (132kV, 275kV, and 400kV).

You will oversee high-value, complex projects within the portfolio, supervise and develop less experienced staff, and provide engineering specifications, innovative solutions, technical support, advice, coaching, and input throughout project lifecycles.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading the development of pre-contract designs and project delivery, focusing on the technical aspects of OHL systems and associated equipment.
  • Promoting professionalism with a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality, environmental compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Assessing engineering documentation for feasibility and compliance, supporting budget preparation, and assisting with construction and outage planning for OHL circuits.
  • Preparing detailed engineering specifications for OHL system designs and costs for high-value, complex projects.
  • Driving resolution of statutory, land, or other consent issues related to OHL routes.
  • Providing technical assessments of tenders and making recommendations to the project team.
  • Defining OHL equipment requirements for System Construction Authorization (SCA), project specifications, and BETTA documentation.
  • Reviewing and preparing OHL drawings and technical specifications for construction and procurement.
  • Managing correspondence and drawings issued to project teams.
  • Ensuring designs and practices comply with legislation, policies, and operational requirements.
  • Leading technical resolution of site/construction OHL issues and analyzing faults to prevent recurrence.
  • Assessing tenders, supporting bid evaluations, and providing technical support to project teams on design, construction, operation, and maintenance matters.
  • Preparing project quality documentation and ensuring delivery of quality standards.
  • Driving industry best practices, technological advances, and applying new ideas for cost savings, safety, and efficiency.
  • Contributing to training needs and developing safety and operational packages for new products.
  • Mentoring less experienced staff and liaising with multidisciplinary teams for integrated solutions.

What you’ll bring

  • Engineering degree or HND/HNC with equivalent experience.
  • Progress toward professional institution membership.
  • Significant experience in transmission overhead line engineering and associated equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration.
  • Promoting CDM and health & safety best practices in design.
  • Experience delivering engineering solutions for high-value, complex OHL projects.
  • Ability to influence senior managers and produce clear technical reports.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Engineering degree or HND/HNC with 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in delivering complex transmission OHL projects.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills.

What’s in it for you
