Lead Design Engineer

Location: Multiple locations available: Crawley, Stockport, or Somerset.

Hybrid working: 3 days on-site per week.

About the role

The Lead Design Engineer manages engineering tasks within defined parameters of cost, schedule, performance, and quality. The role involves designing, developing, and producing specialized hardware, currently manufactured abroad. Key challenges include aligning technical documentation with local manufacturing capabilities and resolving cross-border communication issues to ensure seamless production and delivery.

What you'll be doing

• Lead UK and non-UK engineering teams, overseeing mechanical design engineers, clarifying roles, tracking task timelines, and holding daily stand-ups for alignment and issue resolution.
• Manage the accuracy and feasibility of mechanical designs for overseas production, ensuring tolerances meet specifications.
• Improve response times to overseas team queries, streamline communication, and facilitate faster feedback and resolution of technical issues.
• Identify and address gaps in the Data Pack, modifying or redesigning components to align with foreign manufacturing needs.
• Lead hardware engineering packages from requirements through design, development, and IVVQ, aligning with project milestones and tailoring processes as needed.
• Maintain supplier relationships to meet client requirements during procurement and implementation, considering cross-border challenges.
• Prepare monthly engineering dashboards and support the Work Package Manager by defining work packages aligned with plans, costs, and budgets.

Your experience

• Proactive leadership in team and technical management.
• Strong background in electrical, mechanical design, systems engineering, or design lifecycle management.
• Excellent collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage risks across dispersed teams.
• Experience in requirements management, problem-solving, and aligning with manufacturing capabilities.

You will have the following

• Experience in Systems, Hardware, Electronics, or Mechanical Engineering within a highly regulated environment, managing multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience with Engineering Lifecycle Management, including technical leadership, design tolerances, and lifecycle reviews (PDR, CDR).
• Knowledge of engineering tools such as Primavera P6, Chorus2, DDQS, JIRA, or similar lifecycle management tools.
