Job summary

A leading global engineering firm seeks a Lead Design Engineer to join their Birmingham team. You will lead technical teams, manage the lifecycle of design projects, and apply your expertise in machine design and advanced engineering techniques. Ideal candidates will have an HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering, proficiency in SolidWorks, and strong project management skills. This role includes mentoring, collaboration across teams, and the development of innovative design solutions.

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification, ideally in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience managing and delivering bespoke machine design projects.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks for layouts, detailing, and dimensioning to ISO standards.
  • Strong background in project management, commissioning, and site work.
  • Proven team leadership and organisational abilities.
  • In‑depth understanding of modern design and manufacturing processes.
  • Advanced analytical and problem‑solving capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Set clear objectives, conduct regular feedback sessions, and carry out performance evaluations.
  • Manage the full lifecycle of design projects, from initial concept to completion.
  • Coordinate timelines, oversee multiple priorities, and ensure quality standards are achieved.
  • Design, model, and optimise systems using advanced engineering techniques and simulations.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and validate new design concepts.
  • Use Design for Manufacture and Value Engineering principles for production.
  • Work closely with production, software, quality, and aftersales teams.
  • Liaise with external partners and suppliers to resolve technical challenges.
  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation and present progress updates.
