Salary: £87,000 - £97,000, depending on relevant skills, knowledge, and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Contract type: Fixed Term Contract

Location: Glasgow, London, Salford, Newcastle. This is a hybrid role, and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.

We are transitioning from a broadcaster to a service shaped by our audiences, creating personalized content and services. Data science, machine learning, and AI are fundamental to this shift, enriching content and powering personalized experiences.

We seek a Lead Data Scientist for a five-month fixed-term role to support our ML/AI products and team growth. This role leads the Authoring + Curation Data Science team, focusing on automated metadata and authoring tools, with ambitions to accelerate generative AI in content workflows. It's an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skills within a dynamic, transformative environment.

Interview Process

• Introductory screening call (approx 20 mins)
• Two-part interview (1.5 hours total)
• Case study (45 mins: 10 min presentation + 30 min Q&A)
• Competency interview (45 mins)

Main Responsibilities

You will lead and manage a diverse team of data scientists, ensuring their success and results. Previous management experience is not mandatory but enthusiasm for leadership is important.

You will also collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, including software engineering, product management, and delivery, to set strategic directions and make informed decisions.

Additionally, you will advocate for data science and machine learning within the BBC, engaging with stakeholders to identify opportunities, share best practices, and foster collaboration to deliver audience value.

Candidate Profile

• Enthusiasm for leading a data science team (management experience is a bonus)
• Proven ability to deliver value through data and ML products at scale
• Experience working with multidisciplinary teams
• Understanding of data science and machine learning landscapes in industry
