Job Description for Lead Control & Automation Engineer at BGEN Ltd

Purpose

This role offers an excellent opportunity to lead automation projects, overseeing the entire project lifecycle from design documentation through to control software development, testing, commissioning, and handover.

We seek experienced Lead Engineers with a proven track record in delivering control and automation projects within the UK, particularly in Water, Industrial Automation, or Process sectors. The position is available across multiple UK locations, including Stafford, Warrington, Southampton, Grangemouth, and Derby.

Daily Responsibilities

You will manage complex control system projects independently or lead a team of 3-5 engineers, adhering to project timelines. Responsibilities include developing Functional Design Specifications, PLC, HMI, SCADA software, and conducting factory and site testing, including FAT and SAT activities at client sites. You will coordinate with engineering teams and stakeholders, and review design and software developed by team members.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Interpreting User Requirement Specifications and reverse engineering existing control systems.
  • Producing functional design specifications and configuring PLC and SCADA systems.
  • Leading large System Integration projects.
  • Monitoring project progress to ensure timely and budget-compliant delivery.
  • Acting as Engineering Coordinator, ensuring compliance with standards and client requirements.
  • Maintaining high customer satisfaction levels.
Required Skills & Features
  • Minimum of 8 years' systems engineering experience.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety practices.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and team leadership skills.
  • Positive, approachable, and helpful attitude.
  • Full UK driving license is mandatory.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
  • Proficiency in PLC and HMI software development using at least two manufacturers (Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Schneider).
  • Experience with communication protocols like EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Modbus TCP/IP.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and VSDs.
  • Knowledge of virtual machine environments (VMWare).
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word & Excel.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively at all levels.
