As the Lead Controls and Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering control system projects primarily for Marine, Offshore and Naval applications. Your technical knowledge will help progress electrification and decarbonization in the marine business sector.

This technical role entails working with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to design, implement and test our Controls & Automation Systems solutions to meet both customer and marine classification society requirements.

In this role you will focus on:

  • Providing a technical interface to customers, classification societies, and suppliers.
  • Producing design, installation, and test documentation; maintaining this documentation throughout the project cycle.
  • Working with the Drawing Office to produce equipment drawings, electrical wiring diagrams, cable interconnection drawings, and interface schedules.
  • Performing the functional design of HMI, PLC Architecture, Networks, and Communications Interfaces using standard hardware and software components.
  • Writing PLC software using IEC 61131-3 programming languages e.g., Ladder diagram (LD), Function block diagram (FBD), Structured text (ST), Instruction list (IL), and Sequential function chart (SFC).
  • Designing, tagging, and testing control system mimics using HMI SCADA packages.
  • Managing change during the project lifecycle using appropriate change management processes.
  • Performing factory testing of control systems leading to a formal Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) with customer and classification society.

Essential requirements:

  • Sole British citizenship with a valid British Passport (“UK Eyes only”). Possession of or ability to obtain security clearance to SC (Security Check) level.
  • A relevant degree in Electrical, Electronics or Industrial Control Systems Engineering (or equivalent), or significant relevant experience gained in a professional engineering environment.
  • Previous experience of designing and integrating control & automation project solutions.
  • Good understanding of programming PLCs.
  • Knowledge of Industrial communication protocols, e.g. Modbus (RTU/TCP IP), OPC-UA, Profibus, PROFINET, etc.

Nice-to-have qualifications:

  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards achieving it.
  • Knowledge/awareness of Operational Technology (OT) cyber security.
  • Basic Knowledge of Functional Safety as per IEC 61508.
  • Willingness to travel and to spend periods of time on commissioning activities domestically and overseas.

This role involves work for customers who manage critical infrastructure; based on customer requirements it will be necessary to carry out background checks and suitability assessments (UK BPSS clearance OR UK SC clearance) as part of the hiring process.
