Job description

Are you an experienced rail Engineering Manager or Project Engineer with a track record of leading signalling or control systems through design and delivery?

Can you lead multidisciplinary engineering activities, challenge contractors and take ownership of the engineering programme through installation, commissioning and handover?

Salary: London £79,864 to £99,829 / Birmingham £73,946 to £92,434, inclusive of 20% flexible allowance
Location: London or Birmingham, hybrid working with 3 days per week in the office
Closing date: 28th September

An excellent opportunity has become available for a Lead Project Engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of Control, Command and Signalling (CCS) systems across one of the UK's most significant rail programmes.

This role is focused on engineering leadership and delivery. You will coordinate engineering activities, manage interfaces and contractors, and ensure the CCS programme progresses effectively through design, installation, testing, commissioning and handover.

The position would suit an experienced Engineering Manager or someone operating at a level comparable to a Designated Project Engineer (DPE).

Essential requirements

  • Significant experience delivering rail signalling, control or CCS systems on major railway projects.
  • Strong engineering leadership and management experience.
  • Experience taking railway systems through scheme/detailed design and into physical delivery, testing, commissioning and handover.
  • Experience of GRIP 4 through to GRIP 8, or comparable lifecycle stages.
  • Demonstrable experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and technical interfaces.
  • Strong understanding of how modern signalling and control systems are delivered within a major project environment.
  • Experience managing contractors and challenging engineering programmes, sequencing and deliverables.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across engineering, project, commercial and contractor organisations.
  • Ability to take ownership of an engineering programme rather than operating solely as a technical specialist.
  • Strong understanding of engineering assurance and governance within rail.

Nice to have

  • Previous experience as a DPE, Engineering Manager, Lead Project Engineer or equivalent.
  • Experience within TfL or London Underground.
  • Experience delivering modern signalling, CBTC or railway control systems.
  • NEC contract experience, including understanding of Early Warning Notices and change processes.
  • Experience on major UK rail or infrastructure programmes.
  • Client-side experience working with major systems suppliers.

This position offers the opportunity to take genuine ownership of engineering delivery on a highly complex railway programme.

The priority is not necessarily the deepest technical specialist in CCS. HS2 is looking for someone with the leadership, delivery experience and engineering judgement to bring together the right specialists, challenge the contractor and drive the programme through to successful delivery.
