Job summary

Beyond Carbon invites a Lead Computational Designer to shape advanced digital design workflows for high-performance, low-energy buildings. The role is based in the UK with a hybrid option in London or Bicester and includes potential home working.

The successful candidate will lead 3D modelling in Rhino, develop Grasshopper scripts, mentor the team, and drive software integration across IES, Revit and IFC. A degree in engineering/physics with 2+ years’ experience is required.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in relevant subject – engineering or physics preferred.
  • At least 2 years' experience in a similar role is preferred, though entry will be considered for the right candidate.
  • You must have the right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Lead computational design workflows across live projects.
  • Mentor and upskill the team; set standards and best practices.
  • Develop and document reusable scripts and plugins to accelerate design cycles.
  • Drive interoperability between software platforms (IES / Revit / IFC / Speckle).
  • Lead software development for commercial release beyond Beyond Carbon.

Job description

Would you like to join our growing team? Take a look at our job ad for a Lead Computational Designer .

We're looking for a consultant to principal consultant with at least 2 years experience, and you should be expert in most of the following:

Computational design and analysis
  • Lead 3D modelling on Rhino and visual programming on Grasshopper across live project work, including scripting in Python and/or C# within visual programming environments
  • Prepare and manage analysis models and optimisation studies
  • Rapid prototyping for our developer clients, such as multi-modal performance assessment workflows integrating PHPP, Part O compliance and daylight analysis
Software Development
  • Research and develop computational approaches to project-specific design challenges
  • Develop and customise bespoke computational tools and plugins
  • Drive interoperability between multiple software platforms and building design tools, defining data standards and model exchange protocols - Software integration (IES / Revit / IFC / Speckle workflows)
  • Author and document reusable computational scripts and plugins to accelerate design and analysis cycles
  • Lead on development of software for commercial release outside Beyond Carbon
Technical leadership
  • Provide technical leadership to the computational design team, setting standards and mentoring individuals
  • Drive the general development of the team’s capabilities through individual learning and shared practice
  • Mentor and upskill team members in computational methods; establish best-practice guidelines and internal training resources
  • Represent the future of design both internally across Beyond Carbon and externally to clients and collaborators
  • Contribute to practice R&D initiatives, identifying emerging tools and methodologies that improve design outcomes

Role Description

The Lead Computational Designer will shape and deliver advanced digital design workflows for high-performance, low-energy buildings. We all work on a hybrid basis; this role is based in our London or Bicester offices, with flexibility to work from home. Key aspects of the role are outlined above, and the Lead Computational Designer will also mentor team members in computational methods, contribute to research and innovation initiatives, and help standardize best practices across projects.

Qualifications
  • Degree qualified in relevant subject – engineering or physics preferred
  • At least 2 years' experience in a similar role is preferrable, although we are open to all applicants who believe they can demonstrate the necessary skills and experience
