Overview

Lead Clinical Nurse Endoscopist position at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (based at Trafford General/Manchester Royal Hospital with cross-site working).

The post holder will provide clinical leadership for Nurse Endoscopists across the Managed Single Service (MSS) within MFT, responsible for clinical leadership, governance and pathway development of their portfolio for MSS. They will work with system partners to contribute to the redesign of the Endoscopy Service across MSS, maximise capacity and improve patient experience.

Up to 50% of the portfolio may be spent in direct autonomous clinical practice, with clinical responsibility for a defined cohort of patients. The allocation of clinical time for Trainee Nurse Endoscopists will be at the discretion of the successful candidate, in agreement with the Head of Nursing, to balance clinical support with strategic portfolio development.

The post holder will lead elements of JAG accreditation standards across MSS endoscopy units, ensuring compliance and continual service improvement.

Main duties of the job
  • Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy as an independent autonomous practitioner in line with defined protocols.
  • Identify and implement new developments, treatments and technologies into clinical practice, in line with MFT and local governance processes, including evaluation of changes.
  • Participate in the unit's Global Rating Scale process and standards; contribute to service development and assist with achieving JAG accreditation.
  • Provide professional and clinical leadership and management support for substantive/trainee Nurse Endoscopists within the MSS.
  • Hold a delegated budget as appropriate to support the operational clinical team and deliver cost efficiencies within allocated budgets.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality, clinically effective care, prioritising research and collaboration in everyday practice.
  • Work with HEIs, Endoscopy Academy and workforce development professionals to influence pre- and post-graduate curriculum development for health professionals in the specialist field.
  • Participate in implementing and delivering standards within the MFT Nursing & Midwifery Strategy and contribute to the MFT strategic vision.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential):

  • Registered Nurse on the NMC register
  • JAG-accredited endoscopist in upper and lower GI (including colonoscopy)
  • Level 7 study in health or related subject
  • Recent and extensive endoscopy experience with active endoscopic practice
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and appropriate qualifications (degree or above)
  • Independent Non-Medical Prescriber V300
  • Active professional portfolio in specialty
  • Teaching qualification or equivalent experience

  • Autonomous practitioner with extensive nurse endoscopist experience (diagnostic and therapeutic upper/lower GI endoscopy)
  • Level 2 Polypectomy Skills
  • Evidence of meeting/exceeding endoscopy KPIs
  • Experience teaching, assessing and evaluating trainees in endoscopy
  • Experience leading clinical innovation or change in practice
