Job summary

BakerHicks in the United Kingdom is seeking a Principal Civil Engineer to lead the Civil & Structural team on a range of ambitious projects. You will provide technical direction, oversee delivery, and mentor engineers while building strong relationships with clients and disciplines.

This role combines hands-on design oversight with strategic leadership, enabling you to shape project outcomes, drive quality, and ensure compliance with standards in a collaborative, hybrid-working environment.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering
• Chartered Engineer status with ICE
• Significant experience delivering civil engineering projects in consultancy or similar
• Broad technical experience across drainage, earthworks, highways, external works, foundations and substructures
• Strong knowledge of current civil engineering design codes, standards and assurance processes
• Experience working within CDM and health and safety requirements
• Experience leading and developing engineering teams
• Proven track record delivering projects including managing scope, programme, quality and resources
• Experience working with clients and project stakeholders
• Experience in relevant sectors; sector knowledge is an advantage
• Ability to work within fully integrated, multidisciplinary design teams

Responsibilities

• Lead civil engineering teams delivering projects to scope, programme, cost and quality
• Provide technical direction and review to ensure designs are robust and compliant
• Deliver civil design packages across earthworks, drainage, highways and external works
• Plan and coordinate resources across projects
• Collaborate with project managers, other disciplines and clients to resolve challenges
• Mentor and develop engineers within the team
• Contribute to project planning, fee proposals, tenders and scope changes
• Ensure delivery aligns with quality systems, assurance processes and health & safety requirements
• Support improvement and development of engineering standards and ways of working
• Build and maintain strong client relationships to enable repeat business
