Build a brilliant future with Hiscox

About the team/division:

Our team of twenty underwriters and six pricing analysts focus on Property lines written within the London Market. Seventy five percent of business is written through delegated authority binders and lineslips, with the remainder consisting of direct and facultative, shared and layered open market placements.

We are looking for a lead analyst to join our pricing team working on delegated authority binders business. The role will involve a mix of digital rating tool development, portfolio analytics, risk pricing, cat modelling, research, and process improvements.

The strategy for the Property team is to build upon a profitable, enviable book of core coverholders and clients. We actively manage the size of the portfolio based on market conditions and our internal view of risk.

Expectations are high, but the team enjoys a well-established, lead market position; we have an excellent track record of outperforming our peers. Our challenge is to drive the business forward in a fast-evolving marketplace.

The role

For this role we are looking for someone who can take ownership, work independently, and thrive on ambiguity. The successful candidate will also need to be a leader in the team, helping guide and develop other analysts. We want a confident number cruncher who can think creatively and communicate effectively. You will need to confidently make sound business decisions and back these up with relevant data. You will need to find solutions to problems where there isn’t an established approach.

What you will be doing as a Lead Pricing Analyst in the property team:

  • Providing analytical support for property underwriters and management through large risk pricing, portfolio analysis, and generating and interpreting cat model outputs
  • Finding insight in large data sets and engaging in research to gain competitive advantage
  • Providing high quality analyses to assess expected profitability of new opportunities
  • Clear and concise communication of complex issues to a wide variety of stakeholders including underwriters, reserving, exposure management and RI purchase teams
  • Being a leader in the team by helping guide and develop other analysts
  • Leveraging new technologies to drive the development of our digital trading platforms: Bind Plus and Flood Plus
  • Our must-haves:

  • Educated to degree level in a numerical subject, 2:1 or above
  • 5+ years of catastrophe modelling experience (including RiskLink and SQL)
  • Exceptional technical skills - super user of analytical tools, including at least two of Excel / SQL / R / Python / VBA
  • Speak and write fluent business English
  • Our nice-to-haves:

  • Tableau desktop experience
  • 2+ years of direct pricing experience
  • Understanding of insurance processes such as capital modelling, reserving and reinsurance purchase
  • About Hiscox

As an international specialist insurer, we are far removed from the world of mass market insurance products. Instead, we are selective and focus on our key areas of expertise and strength - all of which is underpinned by a culture that encourages us to challenge convention and always look for a better way of doing things.

We insure the unique and the interesting. And we search for the same when it comes to talented people. Hiscox is full of smart, reliable human beings that look out for customers and each other. We believe in doing the right thing, making good and rebuilding when things go wrong. Everyone is encouraged to think creatively, challenge the status quo and look for solutions.

Scratch beneath the surface and you will find a business that is solid, but slightly contrary. We like to do things differently and constantly seek to evolve. We might have been around for a long time (our roots go back to 1901), but we are young in many ways, ambitious and going places.

Some people might say insurance is dull, but life at Hiscox is anything but. If that sounds good to you, get in touch.

    Diversity and Hybrid working

At Hiscox we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we’re committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success.

We have also learned over the past few years that working life doesn’t always have to be in the office, and we have introduced hybrid working to encourage a healthy work life balance.

This hybrid working model is set by the team rather than the business to enable you to manage your own personal work-life balance. We see it as the best of both worlds; structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
