The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, with shared office space and remote work options. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.

Our Structures Team works on some of the largest civil engineering projects across Scotland, with project values exceeding £1bn.

We manage long-term contracts like the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management, and undertake various major roads, bridges, and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and contractors nationwide.

These contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical and professional growth at all career stages.

The role

Our Lead Bridge Engineers support the Design team and work closely with Transport Scotland. You will lead projects, mentor junior staff, and support client relationships.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team to deliver technically sound engineering solutions that meet standards and client needs.
  • Preparing and reviewing designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation.
  • Overseeing junior team members and ensuring quality work.
  • Managing project budgets and costs.
  • Liaising with clients and suppliers.
  • Contributing to bids and business development.
  • Promoting health and safety practices.

What you will bring

  • Experience and expertise in civil engineering, likely as a Senior Engineer or similar.
  • Ability to produce compliant, high-quality designs independently and supervise others.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including regulations.
  • Experience acting as a main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes.
  • Design and specification process knowledge; ability to review designs.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools.
  • Understanding of CDM and risk management.
  • Leadership skills for managing a medium-sized technical team.
  • Chartered or incorporated status is desirable or essential depending on contracts.
