The Opportunity

We have an excellent opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, or Sheffield. The role offers shared office space with attendance when necessary and remote work options. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across these regions.

Our Structures Team at Amey Consulting is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland, with cumulative values exceeding £1bn.

Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. Additionally, we have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation projects with Transport Scotland, local authorities, and contractors nationwide.

These long-term contracts provide excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages to work on exciting and challenging projects related to Scotland’s arterial road network.

The Role

As a Lead Bridge Engineer, you will play a key role within the Design team and collaborate with our client, Transport Scotland. You will support the Design Team Leader on various civil schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions in compliance with standards and client requirements.
  • Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
  • Overseeing junior staff and taking responsibility for their work.
  • Managing project budgets and controlling costs to ensure commercial success.
  • Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Contributing to bids and work-winning activities.
  • Promoting health and safety practices within the team.

What You Will Bring

  • Experience and expertise in the relevant technical field, likely from a Senior Engineer role or similar.
  • Ability to produce compliant, high-quality engineering solutions independently and supervise juniors.
  • Experience with health, safety, and welfare management, including regulations and systems.
  • Capability to act as a main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes.
  • Knowledge of design and specification processes, with ability to review designs.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools.
  • Understanding of CDM and risk management, with experience in hazard and risk communication.
  • Ability to act as Principal Designer on suitable projects.
  • People management skills, capable of managing a medium-sized technical team.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status, or an equivalent professional qualification, is desirable or essential depending on the contract.
