Job summary

Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking a Staff AI Scientist to join AI Systems within the AI Accelerator in London. You will design and develop state‑of‑the‑art biomedical foundation models learning from multi‑omics, clinical and imaging data to support downstream drug discovery teams.

You will lead research programmes, collaborate with ML Engineers, and publish findings to advance the field while mentoring junior scientists.

Qualifications

• PhD in machine learning, computational biology, or related quantitative field with strong ML/biomedical AI publication record.
• Deep understanding of foundation model architectures (transformers) and self-supervised learning, pre-training, transfer learning and fine-tuning.
• Strong software engineering practices with clean, reproducible code in Python using PyTorch or JAX.
• Experience scaling training and processing large biomedical datasets in distributed settings.
• Ability to translate computational biology questions into research directions delivering capability to Applied AI and Analytics.

Responsibilities

• Own and lead significant research workstreams in multimodal biomedical foundation model design across two+ modalities.
• Develop and validate novel approaches for learning from biomedical data with robust, reproducible research.
• Design and run rigorous experiments to test models, interpret results, and validate against biomedical benchmarks.
• Collaborate with Applied AI teams, computational biologists and human geneticists to align with downstream applications.
• Mentor junior scientists and contribute to the team’s scientific agenda and publications.
