Senior Applications Manager - Sealing Solutions

Based in Manchester or Hertfordshire

Client Overview:

Manufacturer of polymer products offering semi-finished materials, complex machined components, injection moulded parts, seals & slide bearings supplied to sectors including Aerospace, Medical, Oil & Gas, & Renewables. The company provides an extensive product portfolio for demanding applications, serving a global customer base.

With manufacturing sites and sales offices in the UK and Europe, along with global partners, the company aims to deliver cost-effective solutions of the highest quality, from material selection through to product design, manufacturing, and distribution.

Role Overview:

As a Senior Applications Manager, you will oversee the design, development, and implementation of sealing solutions and polymeric valve products within the Fluid Management division.

Responsibilities:

  1. Engage with customers throughout the sales cycle to understand their design needs and provide tailored solutions.
  2. Lead the design and development of bespoke fluid handling products in collaboration with the product management team.
  3. Manage design validation, qualification testing, research efforts, and coordinate with subcontracted resources.
  4. Collaborate with internal and customer engineering teams to optimize material and design parameters for sealing conditions, including lubricant, material properties, fluid levels, shaft and housing hardness, surface finish, tolerances, chamfer, and eccentricity.
  5. Support R&D activities for new materials and formulations.
  6. Conduct comprehensive design validation activities such as stress analysis, FEA, CFD, and tolerance analysis.
  7. Assist sales and marketing with product presentations and communications via webinars and customer visits.
  8. Manage product lifecycle, incorporating customer feedback and requirements.
  9. Maintain professional knowledge through workshops, publications, networking, and professional societies.
  10. Travel within the UK and to Romania as required.
  11. Perform any additional tasks as reasonably assigned by your manager.

Person Specification:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a related technical or design field; project management qualifications are a plus.
  2. Understanding of sealing design parameters such as temperature effects, friction, closing force, load direction, and mechanical properties.
  3. Proficiency with engineering software like AutoCAD and Inventor.
  4. Knowledge of DFMEA and structured risk assessment approaches.
  5. Experience in seal design, material selection, and testing.
  6. Experience with high-temperature polymers (PTFE, PFA, PEEK) is advantageous.
  7. Mechanical skills and ability to use measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers.
  8. Effective project management capabilities.
  9. Ability to design seal configurations and animate moving parts within operational envelopes.
  10. Experience in Oil & Gas, Aerospace, or Medical sectors is desirable.
  11. Knowledge of using composites in fluid management applications is a plus.
