Overview

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Our diverse teams of over 3,000 skilled and committed professionals provide research, advice and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for the environment and economy. The Science Directorate (SD) delivers high quality, high impact, and multidisciplinary science. Epidemiological Sciences is a nationally important department with expertise in epidemiology, statistics, risk analysis, modelling and data science. The successful applicant will join the Department of Epidemiological Sciences and play a critical role in leading and generating evidence to tackle the most pressing animal health problems in GB livestock, with a primary focus on bovine tuberculosis. You will be a lead analytical epidemiologist in the Epidemiology workgroup and provide high quality epidemiological consultancy and project leadership, networking with other disciplines and building capability in staff.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate epidemiology research projects and provide advice within the epidemiology workgroup.
  • Promote APHA science and epidemiology at national and international meetings and conferences by presenting and publishing reports and peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Provide national and international consultancy, collaborating within APHA and with external partners at meetings and conferences as required.
  • Support and deputise for the Epidemiology workgroup leader in management and capability building activities.
  • Apply expertise to national and international policymaking and disease control issues, undertaking epidemiological analysis where high level expertise is required.
  • Represent Epidemiology and APHA in strategic TB working groups, programme boards and stakeholder groups as required.
  • Build and maintain a specialist profile in analytical epidemiology, including writing and presenting scientific material in journals and at meetings.
  • Be a key member of the DES science leadership team and deputise for workgroup leaders as required.
  • Build and maintain key relationships to ensure appropriate application of analytical epidemiology across the agency.
  • Lead epidemiology projects, including design, planning, task prioritisation, progress reviews, budget and resource management, and collaboration with external experts.
  • Support other epidemiologists with analytical epidemiology expertise and policy awareness, including peer-review of outputs.
  • Promote interdisciplinary working and develop collaborations within APHA and with partner organisations.
  • Line manage other epidemiologists, including mentoring and development support for project needs.
  • Provide analytical epidemiology support in outbreak response.
