We are currently seeking a skilled and experienced Anaesthetic and Recovery Lead to join our team. This role is pivotal in ensuring safe and effective anaesthesia and recovery care for both paediatric and adult patients, contributing to the high standards of patient care we pride ourselves on.

Job Overview:

The Lead Anaesthetic and Recovery Nurse will oversee the anaesthesia and recovery unit, providing expert care to both paediatric and adult patients before, during, and after surgery. This leadership position requires a dynamic nurse/ odp with advanced anaesthesia and recovery knowledge and a proven ability to work with a diverse patient population. The role involves leading a team of healthcare professionals, coordinating the anaesthetic and recovery process, and ensuring that best practices are followed to achieve the highest standards of patient safety and comfort.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the anaesthetic and recovery team, ensuring that high-quality care is delivered to both paediatric and adult patients throughout the perioperative period.
  • Oversee anaesthetic preparations, including the management of equipment, medications, and supplies, and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • Provide comprehensive care during the recovery phase, monitoring vital signs, assessing patients’ responses to anaesthesia, and providing immediate interventions as needed.
  • Collaborate with anaesthetists, surgeons, and multidisciplinary teams to develop anaesthesia care plans tailored to each patient, considering their medical history and specific needs.
  • Take responsibility for the assessment and monitoring of patients in both the anaesthetic and recovery areas, including paediatric and adult patients, ensuring that patients are stable, pain-free, and safe.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior anaesthetic and recovery healthcare professionals, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Participate in pre-operative assessments, particularly focusing on anaesthetic suitability and recovery planning for patients.
  • Promote patient safety and comfort by ensuring optimal anaesthesia and recovery protocols are followed, including preoperative fasting guidelines, anaesthesia induction, and post-operative care.
  • Ensure that recovery rooms are adequately staffed and equipped, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and infection control.
  • Manage and monitor post-operative pain relief, including administering appropriate medications and interventions in line with patient care plans.
  • Lead the implementation of evidence-based practices and assist in auditing anaesthetic and recovery services to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of anaesthesia and recovery care, meeting legal and regulatory standards.
  • Address any complications or emergencies in the anaesthetic or recovery areas promptly and effectively, ensuring patient safety at all times.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of training programs for staff in anaesthesia and recovery care.

Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse or ODP with relevant registration.
  • Extensive clinical experience (at least 5 years) in anaesthetic and recovery nursing, with experience in both paediatric and adult care.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing a team of nurses/ in an anaesthetic and recovery setting.
  • Advanced understanding of anaesthesia, recovery processes, and critical care in paediatric and adult populations.
  • Strong knowledge of anaesthetic drugs, equipment, and technologies used in patient care.
  • Expertise in monitoring vital signs, managing airways, and assessing patients’ recovery following anaesthesia.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide leadership, support, and education to the nursing team and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies or changes in a patient’s condition.
  • Knowledge of infection control, patient safety standards, and the ability to promote a safe and sterile environment.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and patient needs simultaneously.
  • Ability to provide compassionate and patient-centred care, addressing the emotional and physical needs of both paediatric and adult patients.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Anaesthesia, Recovery, or a related specialty.
  • ALS or ILS Adult and Paediatric BLS, PILS qualifications
  • Experience with advanced anaesthesia techniques and recovery interventions.
  • Mentorship and teaching experience, particularly with junior staff and new nurses.
  • Knowledge of current best practices and regulatory guidelines in anaesthesia and recovery.
