LAS post for ST4+/registrar in General/neonatal Paediatrics

This full-time post is a LAS post of ST4+ in General/neonatal Paediatrics, with a 6-month contract. The successful applicant will be on the middle grade rota. The role involves caring for children on the acute children's wards, neonatal ward, and covering Paediatric Accident & Emergency. Ward-based teaching is included, along with active participation in supervised outpatient clinics.

Applicants must have NHS/UK experience.

Main duties of the job
  • Day-to-day clinical management of children on the two acute children's wards, Dolphin and Lion, including medical aspects of surgical patients and close liaison with other specialty doctors.
  • Cover for paediatric problems in the Paediatric Accident & Emergency Unit.
  • Provide cover for all acute paediatric referrals from any source.
  • Supervise and teach ST1-ST3 doctors on the Acute Children's Wards and the Paediatric Day Bed Unit.
  • Out-of-hours, nights, and weekends cover for both neonatal and general paediatrics.
  • Triaging, assessing, and managing CYP admitted to the Observation bay.
  • Responsible for discharge and care planning for CYP from observation to their home, ward, or other professionals.
General Responsibilities
  • Participate in teaching medical students and physician assistant trainees.
  • Be part of the acute on-call rota covering nights and weekends (1 in 10 SpR rota).
About us

The Royal Berkshire Hospital Paediatric Department serves a population of around 125,000 children and handles 5,800 deliveries annually. Dingley Specialist Children's Centre offers multidisciplinary community services with experienced allied health professionals and specialist nurses, covering West Berkshire, including Wokingham, Reading, and West Berkshire. The department comprises 20 Consultants: 14 in acute hospital settings and 6 in community-based roles.

Job responsibilities

This LAS post is for ST4+ in General/neonatal Paediatrics. The successful applicant will be on the middle grade rota. Responsibilities include caring for children on the acute wards, covering Paediatric Accident & Emergency, ward-based teaching, and active outpatient clinic participation.

Main duties include:

  • Managing children on the acute wards, including surgical patients, with liaison across specialties.
  • Providing cover for paediatric issues in the Emergency Unit.
  • Handling all acute paediatric referrals.
  • Supervising and teaching junior doctors.
  • Providing out-of-hours cover for neonatal and general paediatrics.
  • Triaging and managing CYP admitted to observation bays.
  • Discharge and care planning for CYP from observation to home or other care settings.

General responsibilities:
