Job summary

Avantor is seeking an entry-level Laboratory Technician to support on-site lab operations, including stock control, waste management and equipment hygiene. You will work under defined SOPs and comply with health and safety regulations while assisting scientists with day-to-day tasks.

You'll gain training across inventory systems, lab procedures and GMP awareness, contributing to reliable service for our pharmaceutical customers and broader science community.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths or equivalent.
  • Follows SOPs and GMP in a pharmaceutical setting.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform standard laboratory support activities as per scope of work.
  • Manage laboratory waste streams and correct labelling.
  • Maintain stock and consumables across labs using the inventory system.
  • Support equipment operation, calibration, and clean-up.
  • Provide high-quality customer service to scientists and teams.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety regulations and drive process improvements.
  • Provide coverage for colleagues and adapt to lab needs.

Job description

The Opportunity:

Avantor Services provides a broad variety of on-site Laboratory Services for a major pharmaceutical customer. The Laboratory Technician role is an entry level position which underpins the laboratory support function. This role delivers the key lab support services to our customers which allows them to focus on the science and progress their projects. Lab Technicians work to an agreed Scope of Work (SOW) in customer laboratories following set procedures and following all compliance and safety regulations. The role will typically include stock and waste management, equipment support services and standard laboratory tasks aligned to those laboratories.

MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform standard laboratory support activities as per defined scope of work and to agreed timelines. Follows agreed procedures and documents all activities. This will include, but is not limited to, the following tasks:

  • General laboratory housekeeping, equipment performance checks (e.9. balances, pipettes), weighing and dispensing, glassware washing, equipment cleaning and operational readiness
  • Management of laboratory waste streams ensuring all waste is handled according to agreed process and delivered to the waste service provider with the correct documentation and labelling
  • Daily use of the Avantor lnventory Management system to maintain supply of the laboratory chemicals and consumables across multiple labs/buildings
  • Operation of the laboratory Kardex systems to store and transport laboratory items (where applicable)
  • Works with the Avantor buying team to source ad-hoc supplies for the laboratory scientist
  • Provides a high level of customer service actively engaging with the science community to understand their business requirements
  • Adheres to all Health and Safety regulations and promotes this ethos within the broader Avantor team.
  • Proactively identifies and raises process improvement opportunities
  • Following a 'One Team' approach, provides cover for colleagues when required. This may be in areas outside of normal working laboratories during times of absence and once fully trained
QUALIFICATIONS
  • GCSE English and Math's or equivalent
KNOWLEDGE
  • Experience of working in a customer service role preferably in a scientific environment but not essential as full training will be given
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety expectations in the workplace
  • Understanding of a customer service role, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPls)
  • Experience in working to standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • An understanding of GMP in the Pharma industry
SKILLS:
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal . Proficient in the use of lT equipment as part of daily role including laptop and smartphone
  • Proficient in using Microsoft 0365 systems including Teams, Word, Excel etc
  • Good planning and time-management skills

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Mainly based in a laboratory environment but will involve visits to other areas and wearing of required PPE (e.9. Safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes etc.)
  • Manual handling of deliveries and a level of fitness required for movement between laboratories/ buildings on a regular basis
  • Computer/DSE work
