Job description

Avantor is seeking a highly-skilled and motivated Laboratory Services Manager to join our team in Cambridge, UK. In this role, you will manage a team of Laboratory Managers and Technicians, ensuring the effective operation of multidisciplinary laboratories and supporting cutting-edge science across various therapeutic areas.

You will be part of a team of four Laboratory Services Managers, each responsible for different service areas, managing a team of Laboratory Managers, Service Lead, and Technicians in tissue culture laboratories. You will mentor and lead 24 associates, with 14 reporting directly to the Service Lead. This position is within our Lab and Production Services department, supporting pharmaceutical companies and laboratories worldwide in R&D within the Life Sciences industry.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Lead and develop a team across multiple laboratory spaces, ensuring effective performance and staff growth.
  2. Ensure smooth service delivery, maintain strong customer relationships, and drive operational improvements.
  3. Oversee Health and Safety standards, conduct risk assessments, and ensure COSHH compliance.
  4. Manage performance issues, conduct reviews, and provide KPI reports to enhance operations.
  5. Support projects operationally, identify process improvements, and promote innovation, cost savings, and sustainability initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • A degree in a science-related discipline or equivalent experience with laboratory environments, scientific processes, and regulatory compliance (e.g., GxP, SHE).
  • Proven experience managing teams, including recruitment, performance management, and staff development, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry but open to other backgrounds like manufacturing.
  • Strong communication skills to build relationships with customers, stakeholders, and internal teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, especially under pressure.
  • Experience managing operational service delivery, driving efficiency, and improving outcomes.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting using Microsoft Excel and IT systems.
  • Solid understanding of health and safety compliance, including COSHH and risk assessments.
