Faculty: Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

Department: OHS and Laboratory Management

Salary: UOM 7 – $106,432 - $115,211 p.a. plus 17% super

About the Role

This role supports laboratory management and OHS functions at the Western Centre for Health Research and Education (Western CHRE) and Northern Centre for Health Education and Research (Northern CHER). It fosters safe and effective teaching, research, and public health activities. The position is primarily based at Western CHRE with regular support at Northern CHER. It manages laboratory operations, compliance, and safety programs, including purchasing, resource allocation, waste management, and licensing. The role collaborates with academic and professional managers to ensure well-maintained facilities within a complex organizational and shared services environment.

Your Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with UOM / VU managers to ensure infrastructure and facilities within the assigned areas are efficiently managed to meet the Centre’s teaching and research objectives.
  • Ensuring the Centre’s activities comply with relevant OHS legislation, statutes, regulations, and policies.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with other service delivery areas, schools, and departments to ensure effective delivery of OHS support.

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to consult, influence, and build strong relationships across diverse teams. They possess excellent organizational and time management skills, effectively balancing competing demands while working independently or collaboratively. They are adept at adopting new technologies and approaches, showing flexibility and a proactive mindset in addressing challenges.

You will also have:

  • Undergraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as science and OH&S.
  • Extensive experience working within a scientific or medical laboratory environment and coordinating personnel in a matrix environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OGTR regulatory requirements and experience working within a PC2 containment facility.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with proven capacity to consult, influence, and build rapport with a broad range of people, maintaining strong effective relationships.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check, which is essential for ensuring a secure environment at the University. If the candidate does not currently possess a valid WWCC, they will be able to apply for one during onboarding.
