Job summary

Randstad Education is seeking a KS3 SEN Teacher for Cambridge and surrounding areas, with day-to-day cover or long-term placements leading a specialist class and delivering a tailored KS3 curriculum.

You will support pupils across the SEN spectrum, differentiate learning, manage behaviour, and collaborate with SENCOs, therapists, and families; a DBS update or willingness to obtain one is required.

Qualifications

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS with secondary teaching experience.
• Proven experience teaching or supporting KS3 pupils with SEN.
• Ability to differentiate subject content to suit developmental levels.
• Calm, resilient approach with strong classroom management.
• Familiarity with Makaton/PECS and de-escalation training is desirable.
• DBS update service or willingness to obtain Enhanced DBS.

Responsibilities

• Adapt and deliver an engaging, functional KS3 curriculum tailored to pupils' abilities and EHCP targets.
• Teach pupils across the SEN spectrum including ASC, SEMH, SLD, and SLCN.
• Foster a low-arousal, structured, safe classroom environment for emotional regulation.
• Guide and deploy Teaching Assistants to deliver 1:1 interventions and small-group tasks.
• Utilise positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
• Collaborate with SENCOs, Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and pastoral staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Adapt and deliver an engaging, functional Key Stage 3 curriculum tailored to pupils' cognitive abilities, developmental stages, and targets outlined in their Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

• Teach pupils across the SEN spectrum, including those with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), or Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

• Foster a low-arousal, structured, and safe classroom environment that supports emotional regulation and encourages personal growth.

• Deploy and guide classroom Teaching Assistants effectively to deliver targeted 1:1 interventions and small-group learning tasks.

• Utilise positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies with composure and empathy.

• Work collaboratively with SENCOs, Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and pastoral staff to support each student's holistic well-being and academic progress.

What We Look For:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS with relevant secondary teaching experience.

• Proven experience teaching or supporting Key Stage 3 pupils with special educational needs (in specialist or mainstream environments).

• Strong ability to differentiate subject content flexibly to suit varying developmental levels rather than strictly chronological age.

• A calm, resilient, and proactive approach with strong classroom management skills.

• Familiarity with alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS) and de-escalation training (e.g., Team-Teach, MAPA, STEPs) is highly desirable.

• A valid Enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or a willingness to undertake one).
