Main purpose of post

The post-holder undertakes the teaching of the pupils and associated pastoral and administrative duties in respect of the pupils in his/her class as well as the general responsibilities in the school as agreed with the Head Teacher.

General Duties

  • Provide well-planned, engaging and creative learning experiences and support for children.
  • Follow and implement school policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the school process of self-evaluation and development, as well as having regard for your own professional development.
  • Play an active role in the general life of the school.
  • Assume responsibility for an extra-curricular activity as appropriate
  • Carry out supervision duties as appropriate
  • Work under the direction of the Head Teacher as a member of a team to provide a happy and secure learning environment for all children in the school.

Planning and setting expectations

  • Contribute to the creation of a strategic plan which identifies Key Stage priorities and targets for ensuring that pupils achieve high standards and make good progress.
  • Think creatively and imaginatively to anticipate and solve problems and identify opportunities.
  • To participate in regular staff meetings, discussions and management systems necessary to ensure the co-ordination and development of the work of the school as a whole.

Teaching and managing pupil learning

  • Provide inspirational and creative teaching which secures high standards of learning and behaviour.
  • Carry out the professional duties of a teacher as set out in the DfES Teachers’ Standards Framework.
  • Support in creating and maintaining a climate which promotes and secures good teaching, effective learning, high standards of achievement and good behaviour.
  • Create an attractive, motivating and informative environment and, where possible, ensure that pupil’s learning is closely linked to first hand, practical experiences.
  • Actively promote the application of literacy, numeracy, computing and i-pads across the curriculum.
  • Help to ensure that pupils develop study skills in order to learn more effectively and with increasing independence.
  • Take full or shared responsibility for the leadership and management of an agreedsubject area.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Contribute to monitoring, evaluating and reviewing the effectiveness of policies, priorities and targets.
  • Provide assessments and records of pupil’s academic and social development, which include samples of learning and end of year reports for parents, in accordance with school policies and national requirements.
  • Keep an updated file to include information given on curriculum areas, meetings notes, etc. and to keep National Curriculum documentation and any other guidelines distributed by the Head Teacher, and to pass such information back to the Head Teacher if terminating employment at the school.
  • Keep detailed records of pupils having special educational needs of any description, to monitor their progress and to liaise with Head Teacher, SENCo and /or other agencies as appropriate in line with school policy; to support with agreed strategies for these pupils.

Pupil Achievement

  • Assist in making explicit to pupils, parents, teachers and the wider community the school’s high expectations that all pupils can succeed.
  • Ensure that resources are dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of achievement for all pupils.

Relations with parents and the wider community

  • Actively seek opportunities to develop effective relationships with the community to extend the curriculum and to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Create and maintain an effective partnership with parents to support and improve pupils’ achievement and personal development.
  • Ensure that parents and pupils are well-informed about all relevant matters.
  • Attend parent meetings, and to contribute to school functions and events.

Managing own performance and development

  • Take responsibility for own professional development.
  • Use effective ICT skills for teaching, learning and management.
  • Prioritise and manage own time effectively, particularly in relation to balancing the demands of teaching with commitment to school management.
  • Work under pressure and to deadlines.

Managing resources

  • Work with the Leadership Team to set appropriate priorities for expenditure and allocation of funds to ensure effective resources.
  • Manage a key area of the school’s budget

Person Specification

Key Stage 1 Teacher

Essential

Experience of teaching in Key Stage 1

Able to demonstrate a high standard in teaching and learning

Able to demonstrate a full understanding of the Key Stage 1 curriculum and be able to assess children’s progress accordingly

High expectations and the ability to create an excellent learning environment, where pupils are motivated and enthusiastic

Fully competent in all aspects of ICT, including interactive white boards, learning platforms and ICT in learning

Is committed to child centred approaches to learning including personalised provision for pupils with SEN or English as an additional language

Can ensure that all policies, schemes of work are understood and carried out

Has good interpersonal skills and can communicate effectively with parents and other professionals

Can demonstrate excellent practice in managing behaviour and pupil well-being within a positive and emotionally literate environment

Desirable

Experience of leading a whole school curriculum area or expertise in a specific curriculum area such as ICT or Science

Experience of achieving high pupil outcomes through a creative and cross-curricular curriculum

Potential to lead and manage a team of qualified teachers and support staff with the aim of raising attainment and quality of Teaching and Learning

Has the potential to plan and lead professional training opportunities and ensure professional development for their colleagues

Up to date with latest developments in the curriculum and approaches to teaching and learning

Interested in running after school clubs/activities
