The Financial Counselor advises patients on all matters related to payment for hospital services. Serves as a resource for hospital staff and external contacts regarding policies, procedures, and forms related to financial requirements for hospital services. Provides assistance with other department activities as needed.

Standards:

  • Courteously meets with patients and families regarding financial obligations.
  • Assesses patient’s eligibility for CNE Charity Care, payment arrangements, health insurance opportunities, etc.
  • Holds State of RI Navigator License, will train.
  • Assists patients in resolving all open accounts.
  • Conducts follow-up and resolves issues in a timely manner.
  • Serves as a resource for hospital staff and external contacts regarding policies, procedures, and forms related to financial requirements for hospital services.
  • Verifies third-party sponsorship eligibility through online resources.
  • Documents information accurately in the hospital financial and information systems.
  • Obtains billing information and completes necessary work to ensure that information is delivered to the correct biller.
  • Explains financial requirements and insurance/third-party payor hospitalization benefits to the patient or responsible party.
  • Interprets and provides information regarding patient’s copayment responsibilities and any applicable coinsurance, deductible, and lifetime maximums.
  • Collects patient liabilities.
  • Applies appropriate Community Benefit and Prompt Pay discounts as applicable.
  • Meets with patients who are Medicare exhausted and evaluates for additional payment sources.
  • Follows up on missing insurance/financial forms.
  • Verifies accuracy of prepared material prior to submittal or distribution.
  • Completes required reports in a timely manner, prioritizing workload.

Specifications:

  • High School diploma required; Bachelor's degree preferred, with a minimum of two years of hospital finance experience required.
  • State of RI Navigator Certification preferred (will train).
  • Must possess excellent human relations and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and strong analytical skills required.
  • Position requires scheduling flexibility and the ability to work in a fast-paced clinical setting.
  • Proficiency in English required.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.
