CMS2 is seeking a motivated Junior Test and Commissioning Engineer to join our Test & Commissioning Department in Portsmouth. You will support testing, commissioning and validation of atmosphere control and air purification systems, progressing through a structured training programme to independently set up and test complex equipment.

As you develop, you will cover FATs, on-site testing, and documentation, while adhering to HSE standards and QA procedures.

Qualifications

  • NVQ/BTEC/HNC qualification in engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Record data, analyse results and report any issues to the engineering team.
  • Maintain calibration and professional standards in shop floor/test bay areas.

Junior Test and Commissioning Engineer

Description

Are you looking to build a career in engineering? CMS2 is seeking a motivated and technically minded Junior Test & Commissioning Engineer to join our team and develop into a competent Test & Commissioning Engineer through a structured training programme and hands-on practical experience.

As a Junior Test & Commissioning Engineer, you will support the testing, commissioning and validation of CMS2's specialist atmosphere control and air purification systems, ensuring all work is carried out to the highest quality standards and in accordance with company procedures, customer requirements and regulatory standards.

Working alongside Suitably Qualified and Experienced Persons (SQEPs), you will develop valuable electromechanical skills and gain exposure to a wide range of engineering disciplines and business functions. As your knowledge and experience grow, you will take on increasing levels of responsibility, applying your learning in a dynamic engineering environment.

Upon successful completion of your development programme, you will be capable of independently setting up, testing, commissioning and troubleshooting complex process equipment, conducting Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), supporting customer installations, and providing technical expertise throughout the testing and commissioning lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities of a Test & Commissioning Engineer

Throughout your development, you will work alongside experienced engineers, gradually taking ownership of testing and commissioning activities as your skills and knowledge grow. The responsibilities below represent the scope of the role once fully trained, with appropriate support and training provided throughout your development journey.

  • Set-up, configure, test, commission and maintain complex process equipment
  • Perform pre-commissioning checks, functional testing, and performance validation of equipment in Portsmouth and on site if required.
  • Perform hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure tests on mechanical components, piping systems, and plant assemblies in accordance with engineering specifications and safety regulations.
  • Carry out, flash testing, IR testing, earth bonding, point to point checks
  • Carrying out activities in line with the company’s test procedures.
  • Investigating mechanical and electrical problems, diagnosing and repairing faults where appropriate. Work with engineering and technical staff to develop new and existing equipment. Ensure documentation and test results are recorded as required.
  • Feedback to the engineering team with any design or maintenance issues that have occurred throughout the test phase.
  • To record and analyse data being captured within the test environment.
  • Run factory acceptance tests (FAT’s) with the customer present.
  • Demonstrate how our equipment works from mechanical, electrical and a chemical process side. Ensure Health, Safety, Environment and Quality requirements are adhered to at all times
  • To maintain professional standards within the shop floor / test bay areas.
  • Keep test bay instruments in calibration, work with projects department to ensure when 3rd party witness testing is required all items are procured on time.
  • Provide expertise on process of the plants along with the running of the testing facilities in test readiness reviews (TRR’s).
  • Provide feedback regarding improvements to the testing facility, showing in detail why it would be beneficial to implement.
General activities:
  • Carry out any other ad-hoc duties as required to support the needs of the business.
  • Provide a professional backup service for colleagues during peak times or during absence.
  • Follow company procedures, standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain continuous professional development to ensure knowledge is up to date.
  • Act as an ambassador for the company in all interactions with customers and the public.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential:
  • NVQ/BTEC/HNC qualification in engineering
  • Strong commitment to health and safety, environment and quality
  • Good hands on electrical / mechanical skills
  • Pragmatic approach to tasks
  • Must be able to work efficiently as part of a team and to work under pressure in a challenging environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, self-motivated and able to work well under own initiative
Desirable:
  • HND/Degree qualified in engineering
  • IOSH Managing Safely
  • 5S / LEAN continuous improvement
  • IOSH Working Safely

Some travel to MoD sites in the UK and customer sites overseas may occasionally be required.

Other requirements:
  • Candidates must have an existing right to live and work in the UK
  • Candidates must have passed UK security clearance to Security Check level or be able to obtain this level. To gain SC clearance you will normally have had to have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Candidates must be able to obtain a basic security check which will normally require you to have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years.
