Job description

Applications are invited for an ENT, Head-Neck Surgery JSD (Higher) based at Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals. This is a 12-month post starting from July 2025.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to work within a friendly department at Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals, covering a busy ENT unit at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) and Birmingham Treatment Centre (City Health Campus). Emergency, inpatient, and paediatric services are at MMUH, while ENT outpatient and daycase services are based at BTC, with additional outpatient clinics at Sandwell site.

This non-training role is at ST3+ (Registrar) level and suits doctors working towards surgical training or aiming to achieve competencies for the portfolio pathway to CCT in ENT. Applicants must have achieved foundation trainee level competencies and possess ENT experience. MRCS qualification is essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, possess good interpersonal skills, and show a caring attitude towards patients, supported by evidence of good clinical practice.

The post involves a varied weekly timetable, including on-call commitments, outpatient clinics, and theatre lists. The post-holder will care for elective ENT inpatients and acute admissions via A&E under supervision. Audit and research activities are encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will participate in elective and on-call activities, with access to excellent educational and training opportunities in theatres and clinics. Regular teaching sessions such as Journal Clubs and departmental teaching are held. Elective outpatient work at both sites and ward duties during on-call shifts are included.

Weekly theatre lists, including emergencies, are scheduled. Participation in the full shift on-call rota (1:8 with prospective cover) covering MMUH, including post-take ward rounds, is required. Most activities are consultant-led, including inpatient reviews, theatre attendance, ward rounds, and independent ward reviews.

Although the post is non-training, a designated supervisor will monitor clinical and educational activities. Opportunities for subspecialist interests are supported. Duties may be adjusted as per departmental needs with notice.
