Job description

FINTEC recruit is seeking a Junior Software Engineer for our UK astronomy client who works with customers globally, including some of the world's largest telescopes. This is a permanent position suited to a recent graduate with some software experience, either from employment or as part of a degree course. 'On the job training' will be provided to further develop in the role. You will be working with a talented team of scientists and software engineers for a unique and expanding business.

The role offers hybrid working, with 40% of the time spent in the Dunfermline, Fife office. Initially, you will work full-time in the office, reverting to hybrid following the probationary term. Salary is GBP25,000 to GBP35,000 plus private medical healthcare, contributory pension, and other benefits. There will be some international travel to client facilities within Europe and Chile.

Responsibilities:

  • Involved in developing software that controls telescopes and instruments used in astronomy as well as big science projects.
  • Specialise in designing, implementing, and maintaining software for applications used by astronomical observatories and accelerator facilities.

Skills and Qualifications required for the Junior Software Engineer role:

  • Experience or training in developing scientific or technical software applications in a Linux environment with C++, C, or a scripting language (e.g., Python).
  • A background in physics/astronomy and experience of control or real-time software would be an advantage, either from a degree course or from employment.
  • First Degree or higher (Masters/Doctoral) degree.
