Job description

Job Title: Junior Software Engineer

Location: St James Court, Bristol, BS1 3LH

Salary: Starting from A£34,788 per year (A£34,788 - A£41,669; starting salary will depend on skills and experience)

Job Type: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)

About the role:

To collaborate with CSE colleagues in the Research and Analysis team, across CSE and external partners on the following tasks: Create innovative software to answer climate change and energy-related questions. To design, plan, develop, and test new software. Support and extend existing applications and use software to help colleagues undertake tasks, including statistical and spatial analyses, and data management.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Contribute to the design of new software features and products in collaboration with the team.
  2. Write new software and tests and develop or maintain existing software and tests to a high standard.
  3. Learn new tools, languages, libraries, etc. as required.
  4. Liaise with customers to understand user and stakeholder needs.
  5. Plan and prioritise workloads while contributing to the timely and high-quality delivery of work.
  6. Any other tasks related to this role.

About you:

Essential attributes for this role include:

  1. A degree or equivalent in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, physics, or similar.
  2. Solid demonstrable experience of software development.
  3. Experience of developing software using Python, Clojure, JavaScript, or Java.
  4. Good knowledge of Linux.
  5. Ability to work effectively both autonomously and as part of a team.
  6. Excellent self-motivation and initiative. Ability to initiate, develop, and maintain effective team relationships.
  7. The ability to manage own workload.
  8. Demonstrable commitment to CSE's primary objectives to tackle the climate emergency and end the suffering caused by cold homes.
  9. Curiosity and a willingness and ability to learn new approaches, languages, etc.
