We are looking for dynamic, motivated and flexible nurses, with relevant Emergency Care experience and qualifications to take up a leadership role within our Emergency Department at St Richards Hospital.

Main duties of the job

To support the senior leadership team to manage a team of nurses ensuring the development and maintenance of high quality care and professional standards are upheld, take responsibility for the day to day management of the clinical area. Take a lead for a specific area of professional practice as delegated by the Lead and deputise in their absence.

To provide a high standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care as required within the Emergency Department.

To utilise a variety of strategies and communicate effectively with patients and their family/carers.

Liaise with the MDT, other departments within the Trust and pertinent agencies outside the organisation.

In order to deliver the above, you will require an excellent understanding and knowledge of adult and paediatric health needs including substantial ED experience and extensive post qualification experience. You will take responsibility for a specific area within the Emergency Department during a span of duty during absence of more senior staff.

Job responsibilities
  • Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based on evidence based practice.
  • To demonstrate excellence in ED Nursing skills and to be a source of knowledge for other junior staff.
  • Undertake and document a comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment and triage or the physical and social needs of the patient.
  • Create and utilise opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.
  • Influence and monitor standards of direct patient care delivery in accordance with best practice and operational protocols and guidelines.
  • Lead a team through the shift.
  • Promote good working relationships with the nursing and medical teams, providing appropriate advice and support.
  • To have responsibility for the security and maintenance of equipment belonging to the Emergency Department.
  • Facilitate the development of standards of care and assist with the implementation of appropriate monitoring techniques
  • Deputise for senior nurses in their absence.
  • Respond to incidents and complaints as they arise, reporting to senior nursing staff.
  • Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions.

We are looking for someone who will bring a positive attitude to the Trust and have a flexible approach to working. You must have excellent communication and organisational skills and be able to motivate and inspire the staff team and be a team worker.

We receive a wide variety of Emergency patients, including Trauma, Medical/Surgical Admissions, Gynaecology, Maternity and Paediatrics. We have a dedicated Stroke service with specialised training and development available. We have a developing Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) run by our Emergency Practitioners/General Practitioners/ACPs who work closely with staff to develop and enhance their knowledge and skills in minor injury/illness management and treatment.

We recognise that Mental Health is a challenge within ED and have a dedicated Mental Health Liaison team that work closely with ED and would welcome staff with experience of mental health or a dual trained qualification.

We our proud of our Paediatric Emergency Department which is co-located within the Emergency Department. The area is bright and inviting and is run by our paediatric nursing team. The area is a safe and secure environment to see and treat our paediatric patients.

We are a supportive and encouraging department with close links to Brighton & Chichester Universities and are supported by our dedicated Practice Development Nurses. We are keen to support new staff with a two week supernumerary induction and have a buddying and mentoring system to ensure that you settle in to your new role as smoothly as possible.

Full and Part time hours available, minimum 23 hours per week. Full rotation of day, night and weekend/bank holidays.

Person Specification
Qualifcations / Experience
  • Registered Nurse with Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Extensive post registration experience (minimum 2 years at Band 5). Substantial experience must be relevant to Emergency Department
  • Ability to safely lead a clinical area (e.g. resuscitation room, triage).
  • Working through ED competencies.
  • Substantial experience at Band 5 within Emergency Care Setting
  • Competent working in all areas of the Emergency Department (triage, resus, paediatrics).
  • Educated to Degree level (or working towards)
  • ILS/Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider
  • Evidence of Leadership Qualification
  • Paediatric experience and working through ED competencies
  • A/E and/or other Critical Care Course
  • Leadership/management Course
  • Evidence of study at Master's Level 7
Staff management
  • Mentorship/PSPA equivalent or currently studying towards
  • Human Factors training
  • Sickness absence management
  • Band 6 development programme completion (or working towards)
