Job Description

Our client Carcinotech have an exciting new opportunity for a Junior Scientist to join the team on a permanent basis. Carcinotech are based in the Easter Bush University of Edinburgh Campus.

Carcinotech is a start-up company looking for a dynamic and delivery-focussed Junior Scientist to join our laboratory team. This role will be key to increasing our capacity as the company continues its exciting growth. The day-to-day tasks involve maintaining cell-cultures, assisting with bioprinting, and performing endpoint assays across the major cancer types. This is a dynamic, fast-moving role so good communication and organisational skills are key.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform Carcinotech’s in-house assays, as required by project specifications, including:
  • Assessment of viability, cytotoxicity and anti-proliferative or cytokine release assays using commercially available kits, such as ELISAs
  • Prepare RNA samples for qPCR or RNA sequencing
  • Perform routine cell thaw, isolation, maintenance, and cryopreservation activities whilst displaying good aseptic technique
  • Receive samples and log appropriately
  • Raise non-conformances as and when they arise
  • Monitor lab fridges and freezers daily, defrosting where needed
  • Place orders for lab consumables, as required
  • Perform stock check of lab consumables and materials against project requirements and place orders for lab consumables, as required
  • Maintain laboratories (such as changing CO2 cylinders) and lab equipment in accordance with approved standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Process lab coats for laundry
  • Ensure confidentiality of all information relating to clients and patients is maintained at all times
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Strict compliance with all Health and Safety policies and procedures

Essential Criteria

  • 1 year experience with 3D cell culture or equivalent complex in vitro models
  • Adept at sterile cell culture and executing commercial assay protocols
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office packages such as Work, PowerPoint & Excel
  • Strong communication & organisation skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to adapt to changing demands and thrive if under pressure
  • Creative approach to problem solving
  • Enjoys the start up mindset of going the extra mile to succeed
  • Proactive, friendly, approachable and displays a positive attitude

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working in a regulated environment e.g. GMP/GLP
  • Experience handling primary patient material safely
  • Experience using Electronic Lab Notebook systems such as Benchling
