Job description

Join Westminster's Digital & Innovation team as a Junior Network Engineer. Gain hands-on experience with enterprise technologies, receive mentoring from senior engineers, and grow your skills in a supportive environment. Contribute to high-profile projects that support our residents and businesses in one of the UK's most dynamic local authorities.

As a Junior Network Engineer, you will make a powerful contribution. Working onsite five days a week, you'll be the hands-on support for the delivery and maintenance of Westminster's network infrastructure across multiple council sites. Our aim is to put user need at the heart of our approach.

You will deal with port patching, switch resets, cabling faults, Wi-Fi and connectivity issues. Also, you'll assist with setup and logistics for site moves, adds and changes. Document changes to network infrastructure and maintain accurate patching records. You'll liaise with users, engineers and vendors to support local infrastructure tasks.

You'll help improve services through analysis, reviews, fixes and upgrades. Specifically, you'll work with Solution Architects and Senior Network Engineers to translate designs into operations. Whenever implementing a change, you'll prepare software implementation procedures with fall back contingency plans to ensure that all is properly installed and thoroughly tested. Ensure timely communication during planned disruptions to services.

To be a good fit, you'll bring some experience in a network support or IT operations role. This has built your familiarity with the fundamentals: IP, subnets, VLANs, DHCP, DNS, and Wi-Fi basics. It would be a plus if you have some knowledge of enterprise-grade networking tools, such as Cisco, Aruba, Palo Alto.

You understand the context and demands of infrastructure support within local government settings. Familiar with GDPR and cybersecurity best practice, you apply basic cyber hygiene and secure access protocols with confidence. Also, you're aware of ITIL service management principles.

Independent on-site work is comfortable for you. But you're also ready to respond to the technical direction of senior staff - escalating issues, where appropriate. You are a strong communicator with great interpersonal skills. Reliable and self-motivated, you can take ownership of assigned tasks. You're highly organised with an astute attention to detail when recording or updating technical data.

You hold or are working towards entry-level certifications, such as CompTIA Network+ or Security+, Cisco CCNA, or any relevant vendor, cloud or foundation-level ones.
