Job Description:

We are looking for a Junior Managing Editor to join the Adult Editorial team at Bloomsbury in the General division, where we publish everything from ice-hockey romances to Gladiators: Ready!

This is a project-management role. As a junior managing editor, you will oversee a list of fiction, non-fiction and illustrated books from handover from the commissioning editor through to print. This entails organising everything a book might need before it can be released into the world, from a copy-edit to a map. You will learn from senior members of the team as you take on more complex titles, including on major brands.

This is a key role in a growing part of the business where you will be working on both text-only and fully illustrated books, collaborating closely with the commissioning editors on these titles. It’s not a commissioning role – rather, we’re looking for someone with a passion for the detail of making books, from the perfect chapter illustration to a clean proofread. In our division, we love our genres – and we’d want you to have a similar interest in romance, crime, sci-fi/fantasy and fun commercial non-fiction.

We are looking for someone with excellent organisational skills, who will prioritise building great relationships with authors, freelancers and colleagues and will take the initiative on projects. This is not an entry-level role, but a step up for an editorial or production assistant, or someone at a similar level in a related industry.

If you fit these criteria, we want to hear from you – whether you already work in publishing or not. We welcome applications from people who have worked in similar roles in other industries.

This is a non-commissioning role within editorial management, reporting to the Senior Managing Editor.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Highly organised, ideally with experience in editorial projects
  • A passion for books, and awareness of the market
  • Experience editing text – specifically proofreading and copyediting, but sub-editing would also count
  • Excellent communication skills, with both internal and external stakeholders

The role is a full-time permanent position based at our London office at 50 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3DP on a hybrid working pattern of 2 days office-based / 3 days home based (or fully office-based if preferred). Allocated office days are Mondays and Tuesdays.
