Job summary

The University of Sheffield is seeking a Junior Data Engineer to support regional and national health data assets. You will work with Data Connect to build secure pipelines, curate datasets and help map health data to standard models like OMOP CDM.

You will collaborate with Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Data Managers to deliver data assets for research while following governance and security frameworks.

Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Data Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Strong proficiency in SQL (joining, aggregating, subqueries, performance tuning).
• Good foundational coding skills (e.g., Python) with a structured approach to coding.
• An interest in working with challenging real-world health care datasets.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills to interact confidently with technical peers and external researchers (including the NHS).
• Awareness of sensitive data handling, data governance, and compliance standards.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure)
• Awareness of health data standards such as OMOP CDM or clinical coding frameworks (e.g., SNOMED CT, ICD-10).

Responsibilities

• Deliver data asset updates and health data extracts accurately and on time.
• Troubleshoot technical challenges and optimize data workflows for performance and accessibility.
• Clean, map and standardize health datasets to OMOP CDM.
• Develop reproducible, secure data pipelines for research projects.
• Maintain data assets within secure data platforms and infrastructure.
• Assist with data validation and ensuring extracts match cohort specifications.
• Maintain data dictionaries and metadata for stakeholder understanding.
