About the Role

The Athletic seeks a junior editor for its football desk in the United Kingdom. The candidate will be involved in all the day-to-day coverage of professional football, including writer collaboration, editing and publishing content, and news gathering. The ideal candidate will be self-starting, energetic, a sports-loving news enthusiast capable of editing any story type and thriving in a real-time news environment.

This role requires a combination of office-based and remote work, with a minimum of 3 days per week in our London office.

Responsibilities
  1. Be ready to jump on breaking news and participate in live coverage.
  2. Generate thoughtful, smart, and relevant story ideas.
  3. Line and copy edit stories from start to finish for quality, context, style, and grammar.
  4. Work with writers and provide guidance in covering news and events while supporting company initiatives.
  5. Identify ideas for developing news stories.
  6. Embrace innovative methods to cover news in a live environment.
  7. Follow best practices and use data and feedback on headline writing for SEO purposes.
Requirements
  • Experience in news and feature editing on digital platforms is a plus.
  • Experience in content development, from idea generation to publishing.
  • Strong news judgment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly.
  • Deep knowledge of and passion for sports, primarily football.
  • Knowledge of WordPress and photo editing skills are a plus.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • This role requires a combination of office-based and remote work, with a minimum of 3 days per week in our London office.
