Job summary

HCLTech in Edinburgh is seeking a Junior DevOps Engineer on a fixed-term contract to join the API Marketplace Team. The role focuses on cloud, automation, platform engineering, and CI/CD, with hands-on work on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

It’s hybrid work, for 12 months, offering mentorship and exposure to modern tooling. You will gain experience with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, Kubernetes, monitoring, and platform engineering while being mentored by senior engineers to accelerate

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent practical experience in CS/IT.
• Foundational cloud concepts and Linux basics.
• Experience with Git and version control.
• Scripting with Bash, Python, or similar languages.
• Understanding of DevOps life cycle and CI/CD concepts.
• Basic networking knowledge (DNS/HTTP/TCP/IP).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and teamwork.
• Awareness of IaC tooling and cloud-native practices.

Responsibilities

• Assist in deploying and maintaining cloud infrastructure.

Within the API & Digital Services Platform, the API Marketplace Team plays a critical role in enabling API discovery, reuse, and self-service across the Group. Our platform acts as the front door for API consumers and providers, helping engineering teams accelerate delivery while adhering to enterprise standards for security, resilience, governance, and operational excellence.

As part of our ongoing transformation journey, we are modernising our platform using cloud-native technologies, automation, DevOps best practices, and developer-centric tooling to improve reliability, scalability, and customer experience.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Junior DevOps Engineer to join our growing API Marketplace engineering team

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer who is passionate about cloud technology, automation, platform engineering, and continuous delivery. You'll gain hands-on experience working with modern cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, container technologies, monitoring solutions, and API platforms while being mentored by experienced platform and DevOps engineers.

You will contribute to the operational excellence and continuous improvement of our strategic API Marketplace platform while building skills that will accelerate your career in cloud and platform engineering.

Assist with the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of cloud infrastructure hosted on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Support infrastructure provisioning using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles.

Help manage development, test, and production environments.

CI/CD & Release Automation

Support the creation, enhancement, and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines.

Assist development teams in automating build, testing, deployment, and release activities.

Help identify opportunities to reduce manual effort through automation.

Contribute to the operation and enhancement of the API Marketplace platform.

Support platform upgrades, configuration changes, and service onboarding activities.

Assist in delivering self-service capabilities that improve developer experience.

Infrastructure as Code

Learn and apply Infrastructure as Code practices using tools such as Terraform.

Support automated provisioning and configuration management activities.

Assist in maintaining reusable infrastructure modules and deployment templates.

Support containerised workloads running on Kubernetes platforms.

Assist in troubleshooting and resolving issues relating to container deployments.

Learn cloud-native deployment and operational best practices.

Monitoring & Observability

Support platform monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions.

Assist in analysing application and infrastructure performance metrics.

Help investigate incidents and identify root causes under the guidance of senior engineers.

Operational Support

Participate in operational support activities including incident management and problem resolution.

Assist in maintaining platform availability, performance, and reliability.

Support regular maintenance and operational improvement initiatives.

Security & Compliance

Apply security-first engineering principles in daily activities.

Assist in implementing secure infrastructure configurations and access controls.

Help ensure compliance with organisational security and governance requirements.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

Maintain technical documentation, operational runbooks, and troubleshooting guides.

Document standard operating procedures and platform configurations.

Share knowledge and learning outcomes with team members.

Actively develop knowledge of cloud engineering, DevOps tooling, automation, and platform engineering practices.

Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.

Foundational understanding of cloud computing concepts.
