This is a great opportunity to join our community of experts at DWP Digital as an Associate DevOps Engineer.

This role would be suitable for Level 4 DevOps Apprenticeship graduates, university graduates with a Computer Science related Degree or someone with relevant experience.

DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work and make payments worth over £195bn a year, to support millions of daily users.

Our DWP Digital teams are using fresh ideas and leading-edge technologies to create innovative, scalable and user-centric digital solutions that are changing how people interact with government services.

The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.

Develop. Work. Progress.

As a DevOps Engineer you will be part of a multi-functional agile delivery team. You'll be working with and learning from other engineers, researchers, testers and more.

You'll work on the design, development and maintenance of infrastructure-as-code, configuration-as-code, continuous integration and deployment for DWP services.

We don't expect you to know everything, and you'll have access to lots of expertise as part of our DevOps community. It's a brilliant place to be a junior engineer - with opportunity to work on stuff you won't have done before, loads of support around you, and lots of chance to grow your skills and your career.

If you enjoy problem-solving and collaborating with others and want to work on innovative solutions that will make DWP services better for users, then apply now.

Day to day you will:

  • Understand business requirements and how to turn them into code.
  • Contribute to automated unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.
  • Identify issues to ensure citizen-facing services are repeatable, scalable, resilient, and highly available.
  • Identify issues that prevent delivery of Software engineering activities.
  • Help write code that is simple and flexible to build, configure and deploy.
  • Help find ways to optimise the current development process.
  • Contribute to community discussions about better practice, actively contribute towards a DevOps culture and automation best practices in DWP.

What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?

  • Awareness of Software Development Life Cycle including version/source control and task/issue management.
  • Awareness of Cloud-based infrastructure such as AWS or Azure, containerisation and implementation using Infrastructure and Configuration as Code.
  • Awareness of Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery including automated build, testing and deployment.
  • Good communication skills and a passion for teamwork and problem-solving.
  • You can make decisions confidently, using available information and support from others. Know when to ask for help and when to raise issues.
  • You are self-motivated and proactive, with a strong sense of ownership and initiative.

You'll join us in your choice of our brilliant digital hubs in either Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Sheffield.

We also have all the tools and tech we need to enable our people to work flexibly.

We work a hybrid model - expert to be in the office about 40% of the time.

In return for your skills, we offer pay of £37,497

You'll be eligible for a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions of 28.9%.

You'll get a generous leave package starting at 24 days, rising to 26 after 1 year, plus all the usual bank holidays, and the option to take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi leave.
