Junior Dental Fellow in OMFS

The out-patient department is situated in the Kings Treatment Centre in a purpose built Head & Neck Unit.

The facility comprises of 6 consulting rooms, 2 surgeries, and a dedicated local anaesthetic minor operations suit with adjacent recovery area.

There is a dedicated head & neck ward for adults, shared withENT, and an in-patient OMF theatre running everyday of the week. In addition there is a day surgery unit as well as a separate paediatric facility including out-patient, ward and theatre suit.

There is a 5 chair orthodontic 'polyclinic'. The maxillofacial laboratory is also located in the department and has its own clinical room. The unit undertakes a comprehensive range of Oral & Maxillofacial surgery suchas: Dentoalveolar Surgery Head & Neck Oncology and Reconstructive surgery. Benign and malignant salivary gland disease, including sialendoscopy. Hard & soft tissue facial trauma. TMJ disorders with joint replacement surgery. Facial deformity. Orthognathic surgery

Main duties of the job

The post holder will also be assigned to assist in with theatre with the major Head and Neck cases. The post holder will beassigned to clinics to see patients and develop management plans. When on call the post holder see and treat patients from ED, as well as managing and treating ward in-patients. Referrals may be also made fromother wards and Departments, Burton ED, and from both General Medical and Dental Practitioners. This role is supported by the OMFS registrars as well as a FY1 doctor based on the ward. A Trauma clinic runs each morning in the working week, the post holder will be assigned to this clinic, with support from the senior staff in the department.

Job responsibilities

The duties during the working week vary, the timetable ensures that the post holder has access to all elements of OMF surgery.They will be timetabled to Day Case theatres both in Paediatrics and Adult. Theywill have a good opportunity to perform dento-alveolar procedures in a supervised environment. Post Holder is expected to take part in departmental educational programme, get involved with audits/ projects/ presentations and publications. We would aspire for the Post holder to present their work either at Departmental, Local or National meetings. There are medical library facilities at the Royal Derby Hospital with a full-time librarian. There are separate offices for DCT, Registrars & specialty grade doctors with computing & internet facilities. There is a large seminar room with modern audio visual equipment. The applicant is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education: Study leave isprovided for this purpose

  • Full GDC Registration / Temporary GDC Registration
  • BDS or equivalent
  • Life Support Qualification - ALS
  • Distinctions, prizes, awards, scholarships, other diplomas i.e. MJDF, MFDS;
  • Previous experience in an OMFS DCT post
