Job description

The appointed fellow will provide senior surgical input to emergency general surgery patients at all stages from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care. Duties include oncall at middle grade level with access to emergency theatre if the fellow is on call or assessment/admission of emergencies in A& E, surgical assessment unit/ SCDU when on normal duties.

The successful candidates will be able to rotate between Upper GI and Lower GI with dedicated MDTS. We are the 4th largest colorectal cancer resection unit in the UK.

The fellows will be assessed through regular meetings with the clinical supervisors to make sure career progression and also the passionate to develop higher surgical skills despite in a permanent post.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Eligible for full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Satisfactory completion of F1 training, or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Higher degree.
  • ALS Certification.
  • ATLS Certification.
  • Membership examination with the relevant UK Royal College.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Completed at least 2 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on part time basis) or have equivalent experience and competencies, at least eight months of which will be in a relevant specialty.
  • Previous experience working in the NHS within a surgical specialty.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required at CT/ST1 level in relevant specialty. Equivalent years experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, within specialty and sufficient experience.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Desirable

  • Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making.

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines.
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.

Desirable

  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
